MAHANAKHON SKYWALK, BANGKOK

A walk on the wild side (for some!)

Want a birds-eye view of Bangkok? You can view Bangkok’s vast urban sprawl and more, with this high-adventure experience at Thailand’s tallest observation deck. The Mahanakhon Skywalk in Bangkok is 314 meters above the ground. Here you can walk out on a glass floor where only the brave will look down. It’s a triumph of mind over matter.

How good are you with heights? I’m not great, but when Klook invited me to try out one of their best-selling discounted Bangkok attractions, the King Power Mahanakhon Skywalk,  I decided to be bold and say thank you very much, I’d love to!

Why visit?

I loved the feeling of being on top of the world, looking out far and wide over Bangkok. You know it’s a crazy big city, but it’s not until you are up in the sky that the size of the City of Angels really impresses.

A trip to the Skydeck of the Mahanakhorn Tower is something you should do early in your visit to Bangkok. It really helps you understand the city layout. I particularly love seeing the mighty Chao Phraya river called the River of Kings the lifeblood of Bangkok snaking around. The Gold rooftops of Wat Pho and the Grand Palace can also be seen.

MULTIMEDIA ELEVATOR RIDE

I was lucky, there was no queue to take the lift, however, this is one of Bangkok’s most popular attractions so be prepared to wait, or choose an off-peak time.

It’s a fun ride up, watching the multimedia in one of the fastest-traveling elevators in the world.  You whizz from the 1st to the 74th floor within 50 seconds, there is hardly time for your ears to keep up.  During this time, you see a 360-degree panoramic view in a virtual voyage around Bangkok. This futuristic augmented reality technology is clever and gives you a taste of the vista ahead.

INDOOR OBSERVATION AREA

On the 74th floor, you will enter an indoor observation hall with a 360-degree view of Bangkok and beyond. Learn more about Bangkok’s landmarks through an Interactive Augmented Reality experience and dynamic interactive touch screens.

SKYDECK & ROOFTOP BAR

The Mahanakhon is the second-highest building in Thailand and offers different options for a visit. You can book just to visit the Skybar on the 76th Floor which gives incredible views whilst dining.

Afternoon tea at SkyBar

We did just this for my birthday in March 2020. Bangkok was beginning to be eerily quiet and there we were drinking tea and enjoying lovely cakes, with the most incredible views. It was the last social event I did for many, many months.

MAHANAKHON SKYWALK

I had yet to face what some call Bangkok’s most exciting attraction. All was good for me until it came to the moment to step out for the skywalk. The glass tray gives the illusion of nothing beneath you and the ground 78 floors below. It’s time to put your courage to the test and go for a wander out on the glass.

So here I am somewhat like a baby giraffe that has stood up for the first time and then can’t move! I know I am looking somewhat gorky, but you try it. I did well to even get to this point, I can tell you.

Others found it an easy stroll – no worries!

Of course, if you are an 8-year-old girl who has no fear, it’s not a problem! I sat watching her literally skipping around on the glass with her black shoe covers on, cool as a cucumber, whilst I was getting hot and bothered in anticipation!

You need to remove shoes to make the walk and can’t take your phone out onto the glass platform, so I can’t give you a sense of what it is like to look down!

Getting the best from your skywalk

Best time to visit

Timing is important! My recommendation is to visit just before sunset about 5 pm to enjoy the 360-degree panoramic view of Bangkok’s night-time scene and watch the city’s twinkling lights come alive. Unless you want to have the place to yourself, then head out there at mid-day.

I visited at lunchtime, which meant there were very few people. I had the entire platform to myself but beware of the heat at this time of day. Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the mid-day sun and all that Jazz.

Best photographs

The Mahakhon Skywalk offers a professional photography package, I was very pleased with the photos taken by the staff on duty.

There is a ledge at the back of the Skywalk which looks good in the photos, but you have to get there across the glass. Am I sounding like too much of a wimp here? It was a surprising adrenalin rush!

Don’t carry too much

No food, drink, tripods, or luggage & large bags are allowed up to the Skydeck. Once there there are small lockers beside the skywalk for handbags/phones, loose change etc. My advice is to travel light.

How to save money

Children and those over 60 years old are eligible for reduced rates. Check the website for current rates and compare them with online booking sites, such as Klook. I notice that the price of entry has increased since my visit.

Klook

I have been using Klook for booking hotels, car rides, and attractions in Thailand, Bali, and the UK over the past year. I always found the Klook App easy to use with instant confirmation and free cancellation.

How to book

I booked directly with Klook and on arrival exchanged my Klook coupon for a Mahanakhon Skywalk entry ticket.

There were no queues the day I arrived so I can’t say whether this saves time here, but I found this to be the case when we visited Windsor Castle with Klook in the UK.
