Thailand Health Excellence – A New Growth Area For Tourism?

Inside Bangkok's World-Class Wellness and Healthcare Scene

OK, so it’s probably not a new idea. Thailand has long had a reputation for good medical and wellbeing services among the expatriate community in Asia. Twenty years ago, friends would jet down to Bangkok from Hong Kong for various medical matters, be they check-ups, minor operations or cosmetic procedures. The facilities were lavish, the standard of treatment was generally fine, you got treated like royalty, and it was cheap.

But it probably stopped there; if you had something major, you tended to repatriate or go to one of the top hospitals in Singapore or Hong Kong.

Moreover, the international community using the facilities was pretty small. Very few international patients came from their home country for treatment outside the Middle East and parts of South Asia.

Thailand has now embarked on a programme to promote medical tourism to a wider audience, encouraging more people to place their trust in and sample the skills, experience and facilities that Thailand’s medical and wellbeing industry has to offer. The Thailand Health Excellence programme is being launched on 30 June 2026.

Everybody’s Talking About Health

Perhaps it’s simply our age, but do you agree that everybody’s talking about their health?

As retirees in our sixties, we seem to be surrounded by conversations that fall into one of two camps. There are those who talk woefully about their ailments and long for life before troublesome hips, backs and knees. Then there are the self-appointed longevity experts enthusiastically sharing the latest secret to healthy ageing and living to 100. We definitely prefer the optimism of the latter. So when we were invited to attend Thailand Health Excellence to discover the latest trends in health, wellness, and longevity, we were interested in what the professionals in the field had to offer.

This isn’t our usual travel beat. But as we reflected on it, we realised the topic affects all of us.

This is all about well-being and taking care of yourself. It is about taking the right preventative steps, and we are all getting on and, as a friend of mine puts it, we are all in ‘sniper’s alley’ when it comes to our health in our 60s. It would also be a good opportunity to see the latest developments in medical and well-being technology and learn what the trends in longevity and biohacking are all about.

LWW had to start a migration flight to the UK, so Mr Wren was dispatched to represent her. In his eyes, well-being is sitting on a beach with a cool beer in hand, and he thought biohacking was a computer virus, so he had a lot to learn. He has, however, worked in the medical field and has always been interested in medical developments, so he was keen to go, see and learn….

The day was designed to showcase the full portfolio of services that Thailand can offer, from acute medical care to steps toward well-being, longevity, and biohacking, to traditional Thai herbal remedies and massage techniques. There really was something for everyone.

Thailand’s Long History as a Wellness Destination

Thailand has long been a sought-after destination for health and wellness. We have been fortunate to experience many aspects of it firsthand.

During our years as Thai expats, annual health screenings, affordable massages, and spa treatments became part of everyday life. Those routine check-ups introduced us to Thailand’s impressive hospitals and preventative care. We also visited acclaimed wellness resorts including Kamalaya Wellness and Absolute Sanctuary.

Wellness and Medical Tourism in Thailand

But recently, we’ve noticed a significant shift.

When we wrote about ” Why your next trip should be a Wellness Retreat a few years back, we were referring to the benefits of attending specialist Wellness Retreats across Thailand. In those days, luxury hotels & resorts would market themselves for their stunning resorts, Michelin-starred restaurants, and award-winning spas, all key factors for guests when selecting a destination resort.

These days, the message of wellness travel has increasingly become a key reason to travel; luxury hotels are investing heavily in longevity, recovery, and preventive health programmes, often in partnership with leading hospitals and medical specialists.

The country is earning international recognition for something even more compelling: the combination of world-class healthcare and Thailand’s renowned hospitality is a winning one. Which raises an intriguing question: could wellness and medical tourism become Thailand’s next great travel success story?

Introducing Thailand Health Excellence

The answer may lie in a new initiative called Thailand Health Excellence. Launching officially in June 2026, the programme aims to showcase Thailand’s growing healthcare expertise while encouraging international visitors to place their trust in the country’s medical and well-being sector.

A Tour Through Thailand’s Health Ecosystem

The “Where Healing Meets Luxury: Bangkok” event was designed to showcase the diverse spectrum of services available in Thailand.

From health screening and longevity treatments to biohacking and traditional Thai medicine, the tour showcased the future of health tourism in Thailand.

Read on for Mr Wren’s notes from this fascinating day, one which inspires hope for those of us, looking to age well.

Stop One: Western Medical Care

Bangkok’s MedPark Hospital

The tour started with a visit to MedPark Hospital on Rama IV Road, an impressive, large-scale facility that opened in 2020 and extensively practices Western medicine. We visited some palatial private patient suites, the bone marrow transplant centre, the cancer radiation centre, and the laboratories, including a large genomics lab.  In a nutshell, the place is massive, has some mighty impressive equipment, and is clearly focused on both preventive treatment and the treatment of patients with acute medical conditions.

You may like us, be struck by the lack of patients – explained in part by the problems in the Middle East, which has been a major market for MedPark; the positive from this is that there are absolutely no waiting lists! The aim of the hospital is to have an even split of Thai and International patients – currently, the balance is 60:40 towards local patients.

MedPark Hospital

MedPark recognises that trust and confidence are everything for international patients and endeavours to do so by employing high-quality staff (75% of doctors are trained internationally), using the latest equipment, and providing a rapid, patient-focused, individually tailored service.

The challenge for MedPark is developing its international patient base, which is clearly difficult in the confusing world we face today. That said, they have all the ingredients to succeed, and the bold steps they have taken to get where they are today will surely be rewarded in time.

Medical Screening and Health Assessment programs.

MedPark also operates extensive medical screening and health assessment programs. This includes the rather confrontingly titled Risk of Sudden Death program.

To give our readers some indication of costs, this is currently ‘on special’ at 169.990 THB, saving over 100k THB on the normal price – by our reckoning, at today’s exchange rate this is around $7.3K AUD, $5.1K USD and £ 3.8K GBP. Medical screening prices do look to be cheaper than the equivalent services at the other major private hospitals in Bangkok. However, we do advise, do your own research.

Stop Two: Bangkok LIFE Longevity and Biohacking Hub

The Bangkok LIFE Longevity and Biohacking Hub is an outstanding example of the evolving wellness trend from relaxed pampering to health excellence. Situated in the exclusive icon of elegance St Regis Bangkok Hotel on Rajadamri Road, it is one of two new centres being offered by the Minor Group, of Anatara fame.

This Hub features the latest wellbeing equipment to promote preventative health, biohacking, and longevity. We were introduced to four cutting-edge technologies on offer and given the chance to test some of them.

Epispan Epigenetic Testing

Any clues what that means? Us neither… so basically this is a battery of tests that looks at your health and biological age through gene expression, and how these are being impacted by external factors such as sleep, stress, food, alcohol, smoking, and exercise, which can either speed up or slow down the ageing process.

It also analyses your key body systems, such as your heart, blood, hormones, and brain, to assess their health and ageing. The outcome is an individual-tailored report that covers over 60 parameters, which then forms the basis for the development of a follow-up plan devised with you by a doctor or health care professional.

At LIFE, all testing is carried out overseas, as there is currently no lab in Thailand capable of analysing all tests. Results take around a month. Given this, the consultation follow-up is often done remotely.

INDIBA

INDIBA is a radio-frequency treatment claimed to promote cellular health. At the molecular level, the radio waves (emitted at a very specific 448 kilohertz) help enhance the exchange of nutrients and oxygen between cells. Benefits highlighted by the treatment include skin tightening and lifting, body shaping, cellulite reduction and hair follicle stimulation.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is your ultracold ice bath in a fridge. Khun Nook decked me out in gloves, a mask, and ear muffs, and then I stepped into the glass-fronted vertical freezer. It did feel strange, but the advantage of the ICEPOD system is that it is dry, so you can go into the freezer clothed.

The temperature can be lowered to -110 degrees Celsius, so it really does feel like you are being snap-frozen. Unlike a packet of peas, however, you are only exposed to these temperatures for up to 4 minutes.

As you may know, cryotherapy is very popular and widely used to reduce pain and inflammation, stimulate blood circulation and is said to stimulate metabolism. I must say I did feel invigorated after my treatment.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) – you’ve probably heard about this, as Oxygen Therapy is certainly a real buzz at the moment. For this treatment, you are locked in a cylindrical metal chamber and exposed to pure oxygen. Treatments typically last an hour, but I was only able to have 15 minutes due to our hectic schedule.

The experience? Lots of ear popping as the pressure in the chamber increased. Once at the appropriate pressure, all you can do is lie back and rest – it is very relaxing. If you suffer from claustrophobia or if you have cold symptoms and would make pressure equalisation difficult, this is not for you.

It is recommended that you take a series of treatments to get the full benefits, so it’s unfair to make any judgments based on my limited sampling; however, people do say it has helped reduce inflammation, support tissue repair, and improve blood supply.

The Bangkok LIFE Longevity and Biohacking Hub goes way beyond a traditional spa, offering a smorgasbord of treatments and services designed to promote preventive health and enhance anti-ageing and longevity… And to do it in luxury.

The other LIFE centre is at Anatara Layan in Phuket, and the Minor Group have plans to roll out the concept worldwide through their luxury hotel chains.

Stop Three: Thai Traditional Medicine

Siriraj Center of Applied Thai Traditional Medicine (SATTMC)

The last stop on our tour was the Siriraj Center of Applied Thai Traditional Medicine, found at the private Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun Hospital (SiPh) in Thonburi overlooking the Chaophraya River. It is a busy, bustling place compared to the sanctuaries of MedPark and Bangkok LIFE.

Siriraj Center of Applied Thai Traditional Medicine (SATTMC)

Preserving Thailand’s Traditional Healing Knowledge

It has a strong educational component, offering students the opportunity to study Thai traditional medicine at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels under the auspices of Mahidol University’s Faculty of Medicine.

Traditional Treatments Delivered by Medical Professionals

One of the Centre’s distinctive features is that all treatments are administered by qualified doctors. The centre focuses on traditional herbal remedies and treatments, including traditional massage and stretching. Massage follows the principles of the royal household, so no feet or elbows are involved; it’s all fingers, thumbs, palms and hands. They also use pulse diagnosis to assess patients’ health.

Modern Facilities with Traditional Roots

The clinic is huge and has many treatment rooms. Compresses are delivered by a robotic waiter, and the personalised herbal aromas used in the steam baths are delivered via a pipe system on an industrial scale! Apart from the clinic’s treatment rooms, there are also spectacular private treatment rooms available to hire at very reasonable rates for up to 4 hours. The cost of treatment is also really good value.

Patients at the Siriraj Applied Thai Traditional Medicine Clinic are currently 90% Thai, and the center is keen to attract more international patients.

If traditional remedies are your thing, or if you are curious about other forms of treatment rather than the usual Western medicine route, SATTMC is a good place to start. It does not have all the luxurious bells and whistles of some centres (no interpreters, international patient reception, facilities for patient families, etc.), but it feels authentic and scientifically well-grounded in providing traditional Thai medical remedies and treatment for those wanting to go down this route.

Why Choose Bangkok

Several factors continue to attract visitors from around the world:

World-Class Medical Standards

Many healthcare providers in Bangkok hold international accreditations and maintain standards comparable to leading facilities in Europe, Australia, and North America.

Cost-Effective Care

Patients often find significant savings compared with healthcare costs in their home countries, without compromising on quality.

Minimal Waiting Times

Access to consultations, diagnostics, and treatment is often much faster than in many public healthcare systems.

A Desirable Destination

Bangkok offers excellent transport links, luxury accommodation, outstanding cuisine, and rich cultural experiences, making it an appealing destination for patients and accompanying family members alike.

Where Healing Meets Hospitality

One of the most interesting developments is the growing partnership between luxury hotels and healthcare providers.

Wellness is increasingly being integrated into the hospitality experience, with hotels offering medical screening packages, longevity programmes, recovery retreats and preventative health assessments alongside traditional luxury amenities.

This reflects a broader trend in travel where guests are no longer simply seeking relaxation. They are looking for experiences that help them feel healthier, live longer and return home feeling genuinely rejuvenated.

Final Thoughts

The Thailand Health Excellence Day provided a fascinating introduction to the breadth of medical, wellness and longevity services available in Bangkok and across Thailand. From advanced Western medicine and preventive health screening to biohacking technologies and traditional Thai therapies, it showcased the diverse approaches being embraced by the country’s rapidly evolving healthcare sector.

A key objective of the event was to build trust and confidence in Thailand’s healthcare and wellbeing offerings. On that front, it certainly succeeded. At every venue, we met knowledgeable, passionate professionals committed to delivering high standards of care and innovation.

The event also served as an excellent preview of the Thailand Health Excellence programme, which officially launches on 30 June 2026 and aims to position Thailand as a leading destination for health, wellness and medical tourism.

And judging by what we saw, wellness tourism may well become Thailand’s next big travel story.
