Little Wren’s Mida Grande Resort Phuket Review

‘We make every moment memorable’. Memorable? It was that all right! The claim for memorable moments at Mida Grande Resort Phuket made me smile. It turned out to be true but it nearly wasn’t to be.

On my first visit in April 2022, I arrived in a power cut as dear old Phuket had decided to upgrade the electrical supply in the area and was hot and bothered. Without air conditioning on one of those 117% humidity days, I was hard-pressed to see the delights of Mida Grande Resort and wondering where’s the generator? I know just call me a spoilt Princess!

Luckily my mantra ‘This too shall pass’ stood me in good stead. The Mida staff were sweet and unflustered as I became a complete puddle and sweaty Betty in their reception area. So I left and headed off to the beach.

All was calm on my return and I was shown into a fabulous and luxurious room, whereupon there was a large clap of thunder and all the lights went out again!

A quick call to local friends reassured me that the whole area was down & it was not just the hillside gods who had been disturbed in the building of the mega Mida Grande. So I chilled watching the most amazing thunderstorm from my balcony overlooking the sweeping Bang Tao Bay and the wondrous Surin Beach.

From that moment on I decided there was much to like about Mida Grande Resort Phuket.

Initial Impressions

[Please note my initial stay was April 2022 and I decide to wait until the resort was completed before featuring. We returned in April 2023 and I am happy to see the resort including the Villas are finished]

They live up to their name, it is grande in every way. The scale of the resort is mega with a high standard of leisure facilities. There are six swimming pools here and if you want you can elect to have a private pool villa.

My verdict

Location: 8/10

You’ll find Mida Grand Resort Phuket located on the west side of Phuket, about 30 mins from the Airport. We love this part of the island it is centrally located. Both Surin and Bang Tao, are fabulous beaches in our opinion, and a few minutes drive away.  You can read more on Phuket’s top delightful beach destinations here.

You’re either going to love the resort location with sweeping views and the options of looking at Phuket’s mountains on one side and distant beach views, or you’re going to find it a faff.

You will need wheels, or be into extreme sports, or hope and pray that the buggy is running to take you to the top of the hill, to Building 7.

Seriously, I took a ride on the back of a staff member’s moped, well they kindly offered, as I was stranded having walked to the gate at dawn before the buggy staff started. It brought back all the memories of a Disneyland Space Mountain ride. Yes, I did have my eyes shut, don’t judge. It’s on one ‘ell of a hill. Full kudos to the construction team.

They have absolutely made the most of the environment and one look at the vista from the rooftop pool on my building and I understood why the resort decided to build here. Phuket’s green side is to me just as charming as its beaches and often underrated.

This is the resort for you if you want to be out of the hustle and bustle of the beach areas. They say it takes 16 mins to walk to Surin Beach.

Design: 9/10

The design of the resort is modern with a twist of Sukhothai.

There are lots of areas where you can see how they’ve taken the theme from the classical Thai style that evolved in the first old capital of Thailand and they’ve fused it with modern elements.

Architecturally it is more modern than Sukhothai but that’s totally ok with me. I always want to feel like I’m in Thailand during my hotel stays and this resort has enough Thai’ness for me to be a happy little Wren.

Check out the grand entrance. The resort gateway is formed from the characteristic red brick of Sukhothai. The resort is found in a series of different buildings with a surprisingly underwhelming reception area.

To the left of the entrance are the pool villas, which offer plenty of space for a family. If you choose a villa stay, you will be closer to Bang Tao beach (500m) and at the bottom of the hill (see my comments on the location above)

Pools: 9/10

Mida Grande Resort Phuket has a whopping six salt-water swimming pools, of which four are rooftop locations.

I was staying in building 7, so of course, I checked out the rooftop swimming pool aspect looking back towards the mountains. All the rooftop pools have a double beach view of Surin and Bangtao beaches.

The rooftop pool is the place to grab some bikini sunset photos with the Insta crowd. You know when they’ve got the location right when you can’t get a front-row place for your photos!

MIDA Grande certainly attracts a big, young, and trendy crowd, yep I fitted in well – haha.

The ground-level pools are attractive and welcoming. The pool at Building 7 has a shaded kids’ play area attached to it with small slides. At the other pool, I come across a lady completing a poolside workout – what a lovely way to start the day.

Rooms: 9/10

My room was a Deluxe room, 40 sqm in area, and is suitable for two adults and one child. If you like everything shiny, shiny, embellished with gold, and your towels that no one else has used then check out Mida Grande Resort for sure.

It has a balcony to enjoy the sunset, mine was pool-facing, or you can choose a mountain or garden views. There are nine categories of rooms and plenty on offer for families or larger groups of friends from two, three, and family rooms. I liked the sound of the Jacuzzi room too.

My king-size bed was super comfy just as they promised. The sofa can convert into a single bed for a child’s sleeping area.Mida Grande Deluxe Room

Everywhere was spotlessly clean which comes with a new build and an efficient housekeeping team who all seemed super friendly. The only thing to note is that there were no cooking facilities within the room, and a space for the microwave looked conspicuous in its absence. I did have a conversation that indicated that no cooking facilities were a deliberate policy at the moment, so check this out if this is important to you to see if this has changed.

Food: 7/10

The restaurants are not fully operational when I stayed. One morning, I had breakfast served in my room, and the next morning I asked to eat in the dining room, which they duly organised. However, as a solo traveler, I ate alone and it made me think the restaurant may have been opened especially for me. The staff is genuinely out to please as best they can

Service: 8/10

There are two sides to service, one is the people and you will find them willing to help (as judged by my ride on the back of a staff scooter!) and pleased to give you a good time.

Shout out to Khun Noon the Sales Manager who was particularly helpful.

The other side is what services they have to offer. This is only going to get better with more guests and as the finishing touches to the resort are put in place.

Value for money: 9/10

Right now they have some good promotions. For their entry-level room (fabulous) you will find a book direct deal on May 1st, 2023:

Deluxe Room – Resort Wing (Building 7) with breakfast THB 2,800 including tax ($82 USD)

The villas are not a bargain compared with the room, but I’m guessing they are having no problem selling them!

Grande 3-bedroom Pool Villa with breakfast THB 26,000 including tax ($762.USD)

What’s To Do Around?

Check out my thoughts on the beaches at Surin and Bang Tao In Phuket’s Most Delightful Beach Destinations.

One thing that is very unique here is the way the resort is working with the Bang Tao Village Community. For more see Live Like a Local Phuket. I attended a tour that introduced us to the local ways of life. We started as the fishing boats can in choosing our fish for lunch. We visited a number of different villagers at their homes to see their farming work with goats, ducks, and chickens and had the opportunity to learn more about the local ways.

If you are looking for a good nearby restaurant check out Nalu Bar and Grill at the Outrigger Resort, Surin Beach.

Or head to Bang Tao Beach where you have plenty of choices of Beach bars, clubs and dining on the beach.

Final thoughts

I enjoyed my stay and was pleased to return for a visit to see the updates. This resort will suit those looking for a new apartment-style hotel room in the Surin/Bang Tao area of Phuket. Particularly guests who are happy to be tucked away and who have their own transport. Mida Grande Resort Phuket is well suited for longer-term stays.

Hands up who has come across Condo hotels? They are becoming quite the in thing here in Thailand!

Hello Wren,
Looks like another beautiful resort. It does sound like AC is needed on those hot humid days. Your room looks lovely, the food looks delicious, beautiful grounds and pools. Thanks for sharing your review. Have a great weekend.

Hi Eileen Yes at this time of year, my stay was in April Thailand is at its hottest. I’m not good with the heat compared with the locals and so do miss my Aircon. Luckily the whole region has been upgraded now so these power black outs (should be) a thing of the past. This resort is gorgeous I loved it. Thank you for stopping by.
