Falcon Secret Bar

A hidden Bangkok Bar (you need to know about)

Shhhh… I’m not sure I really want to share this, as I love finding a hidden bar before it is well known. So just between you and me, I’m telling you Falcon Secret Bar is a fabulous find. When Little Wren and friends are invited to this largely undiscovered rooftop bar in Bangkok, we all clear our diaries!

It is conveniently tucked away close to the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre MRT, with exciting cocktails and panoramic views of the Bangkok skyline. This bar is the perfect choice to impress friends and relatives for a celebratory night out.

Won’t you come for a wander with me, as I show you around?

Why this is a wonderful choice for a night out

You arrive in the foyer of the smart Wyndham Bangkok Queen Convention Centre which has all the feels of an upscale hotel. Take the lift to the very top floor where behind closed doors, you’ll find a secluded staircase leading to the Falcon Secret Bar. Part of what I love about this bar is that it is unexpected and it feels mysterious and hidden.

The Ambiance

As we emerge into the striking bar with panoramic views of the Bangkok skyline we are drawn to picking out our favourite Bangkok landmarks. Down below you will spot the newly renovated Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC), the parks of Benjakitti and Lumpini, the Asoke skyscrapers and in the distance the mighty Chao Phraya river.

What I love about this bar is the connection to the extensiveness of busy Bangkok and yet inside feels intimate and secluded.

Constantine Phaulkon – the inspiration

Those who love Thai history may well know the Greek adventurer Constantine Phaulkon, who almost became King of Siam. His life story is the stuff of Hollywood movies.  He was shipwrecked off the coast of Siam, met and married Marie Guimar, and became a very influential figure in royal circles before being executed.

From what I’ve read he would have been chuffed to have Bangkok bar named after him, even if they did change the spelling of the name so everyone could easily Google it!

Signature Cocktails

There are 9 Signature cocktails starting from 390 THB ++ They represent the three phases of Phaulkon’s life from his arrival in Ayutthaya in 1675 to his death in 1688. All ingenious, pretty as a picture, and inspired by history. Cheers to this!

Sure to tempt you will be the signature Maria Guyomar De Pinna, a gin-based cocktail but not as we know it. With the additions of lychee, lemon, elderflower, and Midori, a melon-flavoured Japanese liqueur.  This is the love story blend between Phaulkon’s love of gin and Marie’s Japanese descent. One of the most popular on this difficult-to-choose-from cocktail list.

Whilst I choose a fab Magrini which looked oh so pretty, Mr Wren downed a Life Path, attracted by the name. The white rum, tamarind, orgeat, and orange liqueur were a perfect mix. High praise from my mostly beer and wine drinking husband!

Bloggers choice: decisions, decisions

Paul and Anna from Chow Traveller, a food and travel blog know what they like. Paul, always the perfect gent chooses The Gentleman.  This specialty cocktail is a blended malt scotch whisky, coffee, and vermouth, with orange bitters, and was very well received. Anna selects the French 40 vodka prosecco and limoncello which suits her bubbly personality.

Aon and Lan, whose blog, Deer is Travelling, which focuses on popular and hidden places in Thailand and Asia select the Marie Guyomar De Pina and Between the Love. This second cocktail is the perfect combo of brandy, earl grey rum, peach, and lemon cocktail topped with the ultimate cocktail topper: crispy Foi Thong, a traditional Thai wedding dessert.

It’s fair to say we loved them all.

Food Menu:

The light food menu offers nachos corn chips, bruschetta, and a cold-cut cheese platter. We did not try these so I can’t comment, although we did eat rather a lot of their chips!

If you are interested in a larger meal, I recommend the Marie Guimar restaurant on the 28th Floor. This fab Thai restaurant is named after Marie Guimar, who was famous for her desserts.
