When you think of Les Sables d’Olonne, the lively seaside resort on France’s Atlantic coast, you might expect glamorous five-star hotels along its sandy shoreline. After all, the town is famous for its golden beaches, bustling marina, and as the starting point of the Vendée Globe yacht race. Yet, surprisingly, there are no five-star hotels here.
At first, this seemed curious. We were invited to stay at Côte Ouest Thalasso & Spa, one of a handful of four-star hotels on offer in Les Sables d’Olonne. Think seafront views, fresh Atlantic breezes, nautical-inspired interiors, and a world-class thalassotherapy spa offering ultimate relaxation.

Why stay at Côte Ouest Thalasso & Spa
Côte Ouest is the kind of boutique hotel where you can truly unwind, and immerse yourself in the joys of the Vendée coast. Perhaps that’s the answer: Les Sables d’Olonne doesn’t need five-star hotels when its four-star gems already deliver everything you want from a French seaside escape.
Part of the MGallery collection, Côte Ouest feels like stepping into a vintage cruise ship, with polished wood, art deco touches, and rooms styled like elegant ocean liner cabins. Renowned for its spa, dining and breathtaking ocean views, it’s no wonder this hotel is considered the top stay in the area.

Location
This hotel, originally built in 1989, offers a prime location. There is a unique blend of tranquillity, being situated away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Grande Plage beachfront, yet with sweeping views of Les Sables d’Olonne bay. Set back from the main road, it overlooks both Tanchet Lake and the popular surfing Tanchet Beach.
The hotel has been periodically updated, with ongoing renovations at the time of writing in 2025 set to offer an additional floor with a rooftop and eleven more rooms, including a few more suite rooms.

Design
This is a well-designed hotel with a great flow. From the moment you enter the wide and welcoming reception area, you can’t help but smile – the concept of being aboard a cruise ship plays out at every turn. The nautical theme works very well with carefully chosen items and expensive furnishings.
At times, it is slightly theme park-esque, but it is always fun, quirky, and it works, even down to the reception team standing behind desks of massive suitcases, in their stripey dresses. The ocean liner styling here has been planned in great detail. I’m told the owners had great fun integrating authentic maritime objects into their styling to create their timeless maritime elegance.

Rooms
By the end of 2025, the hotel will offer just over 100 rooms, including a few suites. Each room is styled with a subtle nautical nod, and we loved the fabulous balcony and views over the French Atlantic Ocean. There was always something to look at, whether it was the windsurfers on Lake Tanchet below or the surfers catching a wave!
Seaview rooms
Room 141 was spacious, with both a sofa and a Queen-sized bed, along with luxury linen. A coffee machine and spa bathrobe were provided, along with slippers and flip flops in the cupboard, so you are spa and beach ready. There is a window into the compact shower room which cleverly gives the feeling of space and yet maintains privacy. I loved the styling!

We were lucky enough to try both the sea and forest view rooms during our stay, but I have to admit, waking up to that shimmering ocean view was hard to beat. There’s something so soothing about watching the distant waves roll in from your balcony.
Forest View Rooms
I wouldn’t be quick to rebook a Forest view room unless it’s on an upper floor. Our room was on the entrance level, and although it was away from the current rooftop renovations and shared the same features as the sea view room, it didn’t feel half as nice when sitting on your balcony overlooking the main driveway – book the sea view if you can, every time!

Escape Restaurant
Showcasing fresh produce and impeccable service, it’s no wonder this restaurant is a favourite for locals celebrating special occasions with family and friends. When we dined mid-week, the room was buzzing – unusual for an upscale hotel restaurant – a clear sign of the strong support it enjoys from the local community.

Breakfast
Breakfasts here are a real treat, with plenty of fresh, local produce and all the French breakfast favourites you’d expect. This is an impressive smorgasbord designed to impress even the most frequent of breakfast buffet aficionados. Oysters for those who care/dare, poached eggs, omelette or fried eggs on demand.
If you are lucky enough to snag a window seat or even an outdoor table in summer, the fine views certainly complement the fine dining.

Dinner
We had a fabulous dinner, enjoying the seafood specialities at Côte Ouest. The dining room is lovely and we sat at the back in a semi-private table. Specialities include a range of fish such as John Dory fillet, Vendée duck foie gras, and orange blossom pavlova. Here’s my meal below: locally grown asparagus, locally caught fish of the day and a pudding to die for!

Bar Lounge
In the evenings, the hotel’s Escape Restaurant and Bar Lounge is the place to be. Overlooking the ocean, it’s the ideal spot for a sunset cocktail or leisurely dinner as the sun dips below the horizon.
Leisure Activities
Thalasso & Spa
This was my first introduction to thalasso treatments, and I loved them. With a large and purpose-built spa and recreational areas, here at Côte Ouest, their thalasso and leisure facilities are undoubtedly a drawcard for guests.
Côte Ouest have over 30 years of experience in offering well-being here, and you can read all about our spa day here: Your Ultimate Guide to Wellness at Côte Ouest Thalasso and Spa.

Seawater Swimming Pools
There is a choice of two swimming pools, indoor and outdoor, as well as a jacuzzi, sauna, hammam with oriental colours, and even an ice fountain.
The indoor pool features an invigorating waterfall that massages your back and shoulders, complemented by relaxing, bubbling benches where you can unwind. You will also find underwater jets and a counter-current walking corridor.
Private Beach
The outdoor swimming pool features its own small, private artificial beach with retro cabins encircling the heated pool, offering a view of the sea.

Fitness
Côte Ouest offers plenty of ways to stay active, both within the hotel and around Les Sables d’Olonne. Start with the well-equipped gym overlooking the ocean, hire bikes from reception to explore the town’s extensive cycle paths, or join a class – whether in the fitness studio or in the water.

Cinema
There is a private cinema for guests offering a selection of daily screenings.

What’s Nearby Côte Ouest Les Sables d’Olonne
One of the best parts of staying at Côte Ouest Thalasso & Spa is its location. You’re only a 6-minute drive from downtown Les Sables d’Olonne, with its lively promenade, bustling harbour cafés, and long sandy beach – perfect for strolling, shopping, and soaking up the seaside atmosphere.
For attractions close to the hotel, the Sables d’Olonne Zoo is a favourite for families, while the nearby Casino JOA offers an evening of entertainment. Both are within easy reach when you don’t want to travel far.
Looking for a day trip? In just under an hour, you can reach the world-famous Puy du Fou theme park, often named one of the best theme parks in the world. Unlike a typical amusement park, Puy du Fou brings history to life through incredible live shows, dazzling special effects, and immersive storytelling. It’s a truly unforgettable experience and well worth adding to your Vendée itinerary.
