Have you always wondered how the French do wellness? I mean, after all that wine and cheese… I’m curious! When we had the opportunity to indulge in a little Thalassotherapy at the much-loved Côte Ouest Thalasso & Spa on the Atlantic coast, I was excited for my own dose of ‘bien-être.’ Read on to discover what French thalasso wellness looks like! You might be surprised, I was.

Our Thalasso Stay
I had never had any thalasso treatments before, but in my quest to enjoy the world’s best wellness offerings, bring it on. I must say I’m a complete convert, even though we got off to a shaky start. In France, it appears, forget any of that polite draping of towels. What do you mean you like to protect your privacy? Oh, how very sweet and English, Madame. And yes, Monsieur Wren, that paper G-string is for you!
No, once you’re on that massage table, you’re there for a treatment, not to be covered by a towel… or anything – really.
Oh la la!

An Interesting Start…
So, let’s start at the very beginning. We were invited for a couples package, which began with a his and hers marshmallow body wrap followed by a massage. The Je Suis Coquette, sweet-smelling wrap, flirted with indulgent decadence, but it didn’t sweep me off my feet. Especially, as I was excited for thalasso therapy – bring on the seawater and algae, I say! So, although marshmallow on my body is not my thing, just call me a boring Wren; it does showcase the breadth of treatments available.
It was the first time Mr Wren had ever had a body wrap. “Doesn’t float my boat,” he summarised, preferring a longer massage instead. Not exactly the start we’d hoped for.

We’re so fortunate to have clocked up years of luxury spa time in foreign climes —this felt more like a pleasant little add-on to a seaside stay than a “shout-it-from-the-rooftops” experience. Nothing wrong with it… But nothing wildly new or different either, and I was missing Thai silk sheets and frangipani flowers, the French styling here is, well, rather perfunctory!
Sooooooooo I was invited to return, with mutterings of “désolée,” apparently, there was some confusion, and we’d been given a couple’s treatment, marshmallow wraps being aimed at a younger age group. Hey, I take that as a compliment, especially as we are both well into our sixties!
From the moment the Thalasso treatments began, my experience transformed.

Where is Côte Ouest Thalasso & Spa?
You’ll find Côte Ouest Thalasso & Spa in Les Sables d’Olonne, on the west coast of France in the Vendée region. They have over 30 years of experience in offering well-being here.
With a large and purpose-built spa and recreational areas, here at Cote Ouest, their thalasso and leisure facilities are undoubtedly a drawcard for guests. There is a choice of two swimming pools, indoor and outdoor, as well as a jacuzzi, sauna, hammam with oriental colours, and even an ice fountain.
The Thalasso & Spa area is part of the Côte Ouest hotel complex in the south of the town. It overlooks Tanchet Lake and offers views beyond the Atlantic Ocean, with its popular surfing beach, Plage de Tanchet.

What is Thalassotherapy?
My thalasso treatments were Awesome with a capital A. Let me tell you, firstly, what a Thalasso spa is.
Think of thalassotherapy as a hug from the ocean — a blend of saltwater, seaweed, and other sea treasures. Don’t worry, they are all carefully purified before they touch your skin. These treatments don’t just cleanse and soothe; they leave you feeling lighter, brighter, and tighter! Yes, they are there to boost your circulation and muscle tone.

First Impressions of the Thalasso and Spa
The Thalasso centre, spanning 1500 sqm, features 25 treatment rooms for thalassotherapy.
Walking into the thalasso and spa area, you have an immediate feeling of Zen peace. You are greeted at a central reception desk, where you can confirm your appointment details, before being shown the changing rooms. Alternatively, if you arrive in your bathrobe, as we did straight from our room, you are directed to one of the gorgeous waiting areas.
As well as thalasso treatments, they also offer a beauty centre for facials, massage and more classical wellness treatments. There are packages for couples and mothers-to-be. Our observation was that in France, this spa was not just for the ladies, with plenty of men in attendance.

The Signature Thalasso Treatments To Love
My thalasso experience consisted of three treatments, each offering a private room purpose-built for the experience, with some quite high-tech-looking equipment!
Bain Chromotherapie
I started with a 20-minute bath disco! All I can say is it was entrancing, I was helped into my bath, given a chord to pull in case of any issues, and left whilst various jets in differing positions over my body did their thing with a simultaneous light show of changing colours.
I very soon settled into this and found it really relaxing!

Jet Tonique
“The Jet Tonique treatment was especially amazing and I have been convinced that I am slimmer all week – if I lived nearer, I would definitely be adding this to my beauty regime!” Little Wandering Wren
This was my absolute favourite! I stood against a snazzy Côte Ouest decorated wall, gripping tight to the supporting ballet bar whilst Virginie, rather like a fireman putting out a blaze, pumelled me with strong jets of seawater from her hose.
The water jets felt so good, talk about invigorating! But more importantly, after years of autoimmune issues resulting in sluggish circulation and mega weight gain, I really appreciated my treatment. I can’t say definitively, but I honestly left feeling thinner!
Top Tip! Virginie, who ended my treatment with an icy blast of cold water, shared a little gem you can try at home. Even if you can’t stand cold water, the suggestion was to start small, with cold water from the knees downwards. It’s a simple trick that boosts circulation and is surprisingly easy to slip into your wellness routine.

Enveloppement Algues
Honestly, after the initial marshmallow couples wrap, I was more than happy to proceed with a solo experience wrapped in algae! This was bliss. I’m a sensitive flower at the best of times, so I am careful about detox wraps, which have in the past brought me out in an allergic reaction. This time I elected not to have my whole body covered; we concentrated on my ‘problem’ areas, my legs and stomach. With the heated underblanket on, it is another relaxing treatment.

Treatment Benefits
From colour therapy baths to high-powered jet toning and a detoxifying algae wrap, my thalasso treatments at Côte Ouest were memorable and left me feeling great. Specifically:
Bain Chromothérapie – here to calm the mind and rebalance the nervous system – tick!
Jet Toning – to boost circulation & lymphatic flow – I was mega pleased with these results.
Algae Wrap – remineralises, flushes toxins, nourishes skin – lovely!
But actually, it was more than this. After three years of trying to shape up, this was to be the start of the new me! I couldn’t exactly say it is all down to these treatments, but I do know I left feeling lighter and brighter.

Zen Lounges
Following your treatments, you have a couple of relaxation lounges to enjoy. You can also sit outside for a Vitamin D boost, and enjoy regulating your circadian levels whilst enjoying both lake and ocean views!
Wellness Club Pool
As part of your treatments, you have access to the seawater Wellness Club pool, which at first glance looks like a lovely indoor swimming pool. On closer inspection, you have a circuit of seawater movement to discover, in addition to swimming!
You can have your own moment under the invigorating waterfall for your back and shoulders. There are relaxing, bubbling benches to laze away on. You will also find underwater jets and a counter-current walking corridor.
Outdoor Pool & Beach
Côte Ouest also offers an outdoor swimming pool at its very own private beach with those stunning Atlantic ocean views and cute beach huts.

Beyond The Spa
But wait, there’s more...
Gym
There was so much to see, do and love whilst wandering Les Sables d’Olonne that we did not feel the need to venture into the gym. However, for those who do, you will find a good fitness centre, equipped with the latest Technogym machines, and you can work out with panoramic ocean views.

Cycling
Whilst I’m having my pampering, wellness happiness for Mr Wren is cycling! He heads out to enjoy the delights of the Vendée Vélo bike paths, with a mountain bike hired from reception and thoroughly enjoyed his coastal route.
Les Sables d’Olonne is a cycling paradise, boasting well-established cycle routes throughout the town and its surrounding countryside. The Vendée Vélo route is a 700-kilometre circular route that takes in many of the most enchanting, beautiful, and well-known spots in the department.

Running
There are also some nice jogging opportunities nearby, both along the beachfront and around Tanchet Lake by the hotel.

Final Thoughts
Once I discovered the extensive thalasso programme, I could see why people travel specifically for this experience. I loved this different kind of luxury spa experience rooted in the healing power of the ocean. Time spent at Côte Ouest Thalasso & Spa is a true invitation to unwind and a definite mood booster.
For me, it was more than this. Weeks later, for the first time in years, and after weeks of trying, my sluggish metabolism seems to have been kick-started, and I have even lost a few inches. Was this all due to my Thalasso treatments? We’ll never know. But if I’m ever offered a Thalassotherapy Jet Tonique again, I’ll be there!
Whether you come for a single treatment or immerse yourself in a multi-day programme, I’m pretty sure you’ll leave feeling renewed, rebalanced, and ready to take on the world. Or at least another stroll along this stunning French coast.
Thank you to the team at Cote Ouest Thalasso & Spa for my incredible treatments. I really appreciate you allowing me to see how the French do Wellness – I’m a convert!

Disclosure: Little Wandering Wren stayed at Côte Ouest Thalasso & Spa as a guest of Destination Les Sables d’Olonne. All opinions are my own. Thank you so much for this lovely invitation.

Dear Wren 🌸,
your report really made me chuckle – Mr. Rostrose would have definitely said the same thing as Mr. Wren 😂! The marshmallow packet probably wouldn’t have won my heart either, but what came afterwards sounds like pure seaside bliss! 🌊✨ I would have loved to try the Jet Tonique – the description alone is enough to wake you right up. And an algae wrap by the Atlantic… one feels detoxed just reading about it! 😅
Thank you for taking me along to this special place – and for charmingly showing that French-style wellness can tick quite differently from tropical spas.
Lots of love from Austria,

Thanks so much Traude, I’m happy to see you here from Austria. I’m glad you feel invigorated with a virtual treatment and lovely to have you join us. I think i’m going to have to seek out future Thalasso treatments, that Jet Tonique was great!
Have a lovely day I appreciate you stopping by.
