They all left town when Covid-19 hit, so it is just little old me!<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">Richard Barrow, Thailand\u2019s most famous travel writer, says a quick hello and then disappears to photograph.<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s1\">We\u2019re in Surat Thani for an action-packed weekend. He\u2019s arrived on a plane full of media, travel agents, Department of Culture representatives, bloggers, influencers, magazine editors, and YouTube stars. Richard offers a typically understated and unassuming introduction. Something like: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>\u2018My name is Richard, I\u2019m a Blogger.\u2019 <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Those around nod, knowingly.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Enough said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Somewhere along the line Richard\u2019s name is incorrectly recorded and we are told we will be joined by a Richard Burrow. Of course, we wouldn\u2019t be the bunch of fun-loving bloggers, if this doesn\u2019t provide much entertainment for us all and merciless teasing. This is a final opportunity to showcase and tweak the<\/span> <span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.xn--12cr3baig9d1f8azp.com\/en\/\">Thailand Village Academy Season 2<\/a> program before it is launched onto the market. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It is a coup for any organisation when Richard accepts an invitation to attend. He gives<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">live Twitter updates on his far-reaching<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">social media platforms. His opinions are listened to and respected. He never stops, every momentary interlude, minibus ride or brief pause before or after meals is an opportunity to edit and publish on his social media &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/richardbarrowthailand\">Twitter. <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/richardbarrowthailand\">Facebook<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/richardbarrow\/?hl=en\">IG<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I am the opposite. I never stop to think about what I am about to write and live in and for the moment. I throw myself into every possible <\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i>do you want to try it<\/i>\u201d experience. I have to feel it, to write it, and that always requires some period of reflection and about 60 million edits! <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Oh, to be like Richard&#8230; all done and dusted by the time he<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u2019<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i>s finished the trip.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">My publisher produces the beautiful <a href=\"https:\/\/expatlifeinthailand.com\/travel-and-leisure\/a-love-letter-to-the-hoteliers-of-phuket\/\">Expat Life in Thailand<\/a> and the humour. Richard politely corrects the English translator telling us the shrimp and sea salt paste is fermented for up to one month, not one week as we are told!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He knows his readership is an intelligent, knowledgeable crowd; he will get a lot of stick for any errors. As <\/span><span class=\"s1\">a keen observer, Richard is not afraid to challenge or say it as it is. He will soon type his 100,000<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>tweet, to his 182,000 loyal followers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s not all love though. He gets his fair share of disparaging comments, such as being lambasted for being a bloke joining our previous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/staging\/8794\/2019\/10\/27\/weekend-wanders-in-a-nan-wonderland\/\">Solo Female trip to Nan.<\/a>\u00a0 But as I tell anyone who will listen there is not a single girlfriend of mine in Thailand who does not avidly follow Richard&#8217;s updates. With over twenty people trying to obtain the same photo, timing is everything, it can get crowded. Getting a photo without someone else\u2019s phone or camera in the way is an art.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">As bloggers we are trying to get the best photos, we also have a film crew and photographers trying to get a great photo of us enjoying ourselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Happier_behind_the_camera_than_in_front\"><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b>Happier behind the camera than in front<\/b><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This trip is chocked full of activities &#8211; local crafts, cooking, and tree planting. The Led Lee Community is based on a river so most of what we do involves long-tail boats and water. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You need fitness and stamina to be a top blogger on these trips. Before any food is eaten it needs to be photographed. He stops work for a brief chat and more photos with fans who approach him staying they have been keeping up with his trip on social media and chat excitedly about their weekend in Surat Thani.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I loved being Richard&#8217;s unofficial photographer, one gets the sense that the fans and I were more excited than he was, you can tell he&#8217;s not especially loving the spotlight.
