Vulnerable\u00a0<b>road<\/b> users including motorcyclists, pedestrians and bicyclists comprise 83% of the fatality. I would probably only want to island drive or in an emergency.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/2pricethailand.com\/the-right-to-choose\/\">Thailand&#8217;s dual pricing policy<\/a> is at best annoying &#8211; with a Thai Driving licence we have had some success at proving we are local residents &#8211; at worse called price discrimination, we are local residents and pay Thai tax. Nuff said!<\/li>\n<li>Bangkok&#8217;s traffic jams are legendary and public transport is quick efficient and easy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However it is not that simple, you definitely need to want a Thai Driving licence, unless you have got the right husband, haha. Read on and enjoy \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1227 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/staging\/8794\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Bangkok-Traffic.jpg?resize=1170%2C975&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1170\" height=\"975\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/staging\/8794\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Bangkok-Traffic.jpg?w=2048&amp;ssl=1 2048w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/staging\/8794\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Bangkok-Traffic.jpg?resize=300%2C250&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/staging\/8794\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Bangkok-Traffic.jpg?resize=768%2C640&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/staging\/8794\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Bangkok-Traffic.jpg?resize=1024%2C853&amp;ssl=1 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1170px) 100vw, 1170px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">I wouldn\u2019t say I married badly, but the American lady at the Thai driving test centre did better. With a military husband, everything was organised for her by the US Embassy. She was ordering her first latte of the day by 9.20 am with a shiny new licence. Little old <i>Moi<\/i> meanwhile was schlepping the streets in search of new footwear having failed to be properly attired.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">They don\u2019t make it easy to get a Thai driving licence. It took weeks of my own military-style manoeuvres to arrive with:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li6\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Proof of Residency certificate<\/b>: obtained by submitting our rental agreement to the Department of Immigration. This took about 2 weeks. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li6\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Five Diseases certificate:<\/b> THB 650 from Bumrungrad Hospital. ( I still have no clue what these are) <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li6\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Current<\/b> <b>Driver Licence <\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li6\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Passport with visa and photocopies <\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">You might not have to prove you can actually drive a car to pass this test but a double degree in Logistics and International Relations helps!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1225 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/staging\/8794\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Transport1.jpg?resize=1170%2C1170&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1170\" height=\"1170\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">With no appointments available within 4 months, I took my chances for one of the 50 walk-in testing slots available daily from 8 am.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">I arrived at 7.20 am to find a shaded waiting area with social distancing stickers. At 7.50 am three ladies with boxes of paper arrived; 8 am a man with a megaphone gives out instructions and waves us forward. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">I was chuffed to be given Foreigner Number 2 ticket, to any Brit, this is a real bingo moment. However, in the lift scrum to the second floor, my number 2 card was swapped for a number 6 card!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">After another check of the already checked paperwork on the third floor, I failed the closed shoe test. Honestly! People normally fail on speeding or not indicating properly \u2026 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The lady on the door smiles sympathetically and tells me there is a market close by but sod that for a hot game of soldiers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Our car is wedged in the parking lot so tightly that I\u2019m tempted to just take the smart black work shoes off our driver but instead yell\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u2018<i>Does anyone know how to park around here?\u2019<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1166 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/staging\/8794\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Tuktuks_Bangkok_2016.jpg?resize=1170%2C878&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1170\" height=\"878\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/staging\/8794\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Tuktuks_Bangkok_2016.jpg?w=2048&amp;ssl=1 2048w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/staging\/8794\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Tuktuks_Bangkok_2016.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/staging\/8794\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Tuktuks_Bangkok_2016.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/staging\/8794\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Tuktuks_Bangkok_2016.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1170px) 100vw, 1170px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">No need to answer! Eventually, I return with new Big C shoes and am given my fourth queue number 278. It\u2019s 10.20 am.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">There is no social distancing, we\u2019re squashed together. I did have a wry smile, noting we may be free of 5 diseases, but I\u2019m hoping that there is nothing more sinister lurking amongst my fellow wannabe Thai drivers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">I watch a 20-minute video, in Thai and then in English about the upcoming four driving tests:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li6\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Colour Blind:<\/b> naming colours seen on screen &#8211; Red, Green or Yellow. Don\u2019t get cocky and yell out amber!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li6\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Computer Dexterity:<\/b> moving one line to be parallel to a fixed-line on a computer screen &#8211; no idea what that was about! <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li6\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Brake Reflex:<\/b> You hit the brake when a green light turns red, within designated good reaction time.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li6\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Peripheral Vision:<\/b> Someone stands behind you waving circles of traffic colours for you to identify the correct colour.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">I passed! Next a safety video with blurry English subtitles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">Eventually, I end up back in the room where I started.
