Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?<\/i><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

<\/span>Did you know, there is more than one Stratford-Upon-Avon in the world?<\/span><\/div>\n

The most famous, being the birthplace of <\/span>playwright and poet <\/span>
William Shakespeare, <\/span>
 but Stratford-Upon-Avon, Victoria, <\/span>
is Australia’s lesser known equivalent…<\/span>

<\/span>Well sort of…<\/span>

<\/span>S<\/span><\/b>hall I compare thee to a summer’s day?<\/span><\/b>
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:<\/span><\/span><\/b>
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,<\/span><\/span><\/b>
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date . . . .  <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/b>

Celebrating connections Stratfords of the World, Victoria<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
When you arrive in Stratford-Upon-Avon, Victoria, <\/span><\/div>\n
or as the Aussies prefer to call it, Stratford by the river,<\/span><\/div>\n
you notice immediately, how proud the town is to be one of <\/span><\/div>\n
Stratfords of the World…<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
But apart from a big silver monument to sisterhood, a Shakespeare festival each year, oh and a river called Avon, they are worlds apart…<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n
In my local Aussie Stratford, <\/span><\/div>\n
the township<\/span> dates back to the Gold Rush in the 1850’s. <\/span><\/div>\n
Old by Australian standards, <\/span><\/div>\n
but you don’t quite get the spectacular heritage like you do in England…<\/span><\/div>\n
They do it their way:<\/span>Shakespeare with a twist! <\/span><\/div>\n

Stratford, Victoria Artists Walk<\/span><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
For instance what is this Aussie chap below doing?<\/span><\/div>\n
He forms part of the Stratford Artists walk<\/a> – Shakespeare through the Ages.<\/span>
This is a 3km walk around the town<\/span><\/div>\n
I guess you can find out more by<\/span> hiring an audio tour, <\/span><\/div>\n
but when we were there, all the batteries in the Ipods (MP3s) were flat<\/span>!<\/span><\/div>\n

Artists walk Stratford, Victoria with River Avon behind<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
Visiting Stratford Upon Avon, UK by contrast is to <\/span><\/div>\n
step back in time up to 800 years. <\/span><\/div>\n
I love the rich heritage and the William Shakespeare connection.<\/span><\/div>\n
 I still shudder at the thought of my schoolgirl Macbeth,<\/span><\/div>\n
but I can recall every word of Portia’s Merchant of Venice speech!!<\/span><\/div>\n

A couple of weeks ago, during my quick return visit to the UK, my brother bought Mum and I tickets to see Hilary Mantel’s Bring Up The Bodies <\/i>at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Swan Theatre. He also bought us a night at the wonderful Arden Hotel and the next day we had a very successful morning of birthday clothes shopping! <\/span><\/div>\n

Our tickets were standing room only <\/span><\/div>\n
on opposite sides of the theatre,<\/span><\/div>\n
which shows how popular the sell-out play is, <\/span><\/div>\n
not how much he loves us…<\/span><\/div>\n

Wow! <\/span>
Standing room only, is quite an evening out. <\/span><\/div>\n
Mum had a rich burgundy velvet perch to relax back on <\/span><\/div>\n
and I had <\/span>a bar <\/span>to lean forward on<\/span><\/div>\n
(but not the sort that served a nice Gin and Tonic…)<\/span> <\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>
<\/span><\/div>\n
Well by the time we had reconnected at the interval, <\/span><\/div>\n
Mum had made friends with everyone on her perch, <\/span><\/div>\n
and I had muscled in on a spare bit of perch on my side of the theatre<\/span><\/div>\n
(thank goodness!!)<\/span><\/div>\n

and if you look carefully you can see the bars to lean on…<\/span><\/p>\n

Talking of bars<\/span>, oh were we? <\/span>
Here is a quaint British Pub in Stratford. You can take your pick. <\/span>
On my previous visit to the UK I met my old University friends at Stratford,<\/span>
It would be possible to do quite some pub crawl if you were so inclined… hic!<\/span>

Shakespeare is everywhere in Stratford Upon Avon, UK<\/p>\n

It is the impressive Tudor architecture of Stratford, UK <\/span>
which makes it rather special, <\/span>
olde English tearooms abound, <\/span>
and you could happily wandered around for days admiring the setting…<\/span>

<\/span>“I like this place and willingly could waste my time in it” – As You Like It (Act II, Scene IV).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b>

So off on the other side of the world, Aussie Stratford has one Avon hotel and bistro <\/span>with a rather uninspiring mostly Chinese menu, <\/span>
but what they lose in setting and Michelin stars <\/span>
they more than make up for in humour. <\/span>

My visit in 2012 saw the British town flooded!<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

Aussie, Stratford clearly likes to piggy back on the fame of it’s elder sister in the tourism stakes…<\/span><\/div>\n

There is an ideal opportunity for all Stratfords to celebrate,<\/span><\/div>\n
 as next month is the <\/span>450th anniversary of the birth of <\/span><\/div>\n
world’s most famous playwright,<\/span> <\/span>on 23rd April in 1564. <\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
You could always join us to visit the town for the upcoming Aussie<\/span><\/div>\n
Shakespeare On The River Festival<\/a>. <\/span><\/div>\n
