There is none so brave as a Wren,<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
faced with lugging her increasingly weighty, <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
shopping-stuffed suitcases <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
through the crowded New York subway,<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
when her DH announces <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
that he doesn\u2019t much fancy driving in Manhattan\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>
<\/span><\/div>\n
It\u2019s OK, I\u2019ll drive! <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
So here I am, <\/span><\/span>
white knuckled at the wheel leaving town.<\/span><\/span>

<\/span><\/span>‘The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself’<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Just follow the ambulance my family said, just in case we need it!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n

Now I learnt to drive navigating Swindon’s Magic Roundabout<\/a>, <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
I am used to driving in Melbourne and Hong Kong. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
I have driven on the go as-fast-as-you-like autobahns in Germany, <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
and even coped with the p<\/span><\/span>riorit\u00e9<\/span> \u00e0 <\/span>droite<\/span><\/span> <\/span>system<\/span><\/span> in Belgium,<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/div>\n
but driving in New York is pretty, pretty crazy!<\/span><\/span>

<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
However,<\/span><\/div>\n
‘When you see a rattlesnake poised to strike, <\/span><\/b>
you do not wait <\/span><\/b>until he has struck to crush him’<\/b><\/div>\n

Thank goodness for our GPS, a complete bargain at $14.95 a day. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
We turned it on and we were off…<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/span>Once, that is, <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
we worked out what a \u2018on\u2019 and \u2018off ramp\u2019 was, <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
then, there was no stopping me…<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
I\u2019m proud to say I only got \u201ctooted\u2019 at once – hooray.<\/span><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n
<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
‘Oh look Mum the GPS says you’ve crashed into the park!’<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
We were off to visit my Uncle and Aunt in Connecticut,<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
I haven’t been there for a while. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
Well, <\/span><\/span>not since they moved into their ‘new’ house, thirty years ago.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
However as soon as we were upstate New York, <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
we were pleased we\u2019d driven,<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
especially as the beautiful warm spring weather turned into heavy rain\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
Back to the white knuckle driving conditions…<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
You must do the things you think you cannot do.<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n

Following the pink line!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
Through wildly waving windscreen wipers, <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
(which I hit every time I wanted to indicate <\/i><\/span><\/span>
 – everything is back to front for an Brit\/Aussie, <\/i><\/span><\/span>
just in case you thought I was totally hopeless.<\/i>)<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
we could see the city becoming countryside.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
Ahead were majestic mountains, lakes and towns <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
and pretty New England cottages in the <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
rolling pastoral farmland of Dutchess County.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
The region was home to the Vanderbilts and <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and is rich in history.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
We were heading to the Hudson Valley\/Catskills region <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
and specifically, to the old town of Rhinebeck,<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
recommended as a great place <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
to stop and explore, thanks Liz!<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

Beekman Arms – America’s oldest inn, built in 1766<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
From Rhinebeck it’s a short drive to <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
Franklin D Roosevelt’s <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
Presidential Library and Museum.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
We needed something indoors (to be dry!)<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
and we couldn’t have picked better. <\/span><\/span>
We thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon<\/span><\/span>
 at the estate in Hyde Park.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

We enjoyed learning more about their lives, <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
we got a real sense of the <\/span>depths of Great Depression, <\/span><\/span>
FDR’s personal struggles,<\/span><\/span>
the New Deal and World War Two. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
We felt by the end of our visit,<\/span><\/span>
 we’d really got to know both of them a little better through their lives.<\/span><\/span>
 They both had some great quotes…<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

We don’t know our true strength until we are in hot water!<\/span><\/div>\n

The museum had many interactive exhibits <\/span><\/div>\n
which we all enjoyed, <\/span>even our teenage son.<\/span><\/div>\n
It can’t be easy suddenly going from the baby of the family <\/span><\/div>\n
to <\/span>Chief Bell Boy, with his older sisters off exploring the world.<\/span><\/div>\n

We were glad we had him with us<\/span><\/div>\n
You have no idea how many times he carried the suitcases, <\/span><\/div>\n
or we lost the keys <\/span>between picking them up at the front desk of a hotel, <\/span><\/div>\n
and arriving at the lift or outside the room!<\/span><\/div>\n
It got to be such a joke.<\/span><\/div>\n

‘You’re a worry,’<\/i> he would say, <\/span><\/div>\n
‘When can I put you Guys in a home?!’<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n
‘After we’ve stopped paying for such nice holidays’ <\/i>we replied!!<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n

Fast forward to the end of our trip to Connecticut,<\/span><\/div>\n
we’re in a rush to get back into New York <\/span><\/div>\n
By this time I am no longer driving<\/span><\/div>\n
Everyone decided that it was better if I didn’t…<\/span><\/div>\n

Succcessss!!!<\/span><\/div>\n

No one mentioned that getting back onto Manhattan for Easter weekend <\/span><\/div>\n
is like sixty million cars all queued up for one tiny parking lot.<\/span><\/div>\n
It took us four hours to get through the Lincoln tunnel.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
There are many ways of going forward, but only one way of standing still.<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n

We had no time to drop the suitcases off at our return New York hotel, <\/span><\/div>\n
we have a train to catch to Washington DC.<\/span><\/div>\n
DH drops me and Bell Boy off close to Madison Square Gardens,<\/span><\/div>\n
We leg it through the people.<\/span><\/div>\n
Me clearing the way in the tide of humanity <\/span><\/div>\n
‘Excuse me, Excuse me’ <\/i><\/span><\/div>\n
in my best British accent<\/span><\/div>\n
Yep in a crisis, become very British!<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
American’s always love a British accent<\/b> <\/i><\/span><\/div>\n
(well maybe not if they are talking about who <\/i><\/span><\/div>\n
burned down the original Capital Building, <\/i><\/span><\/div>\n
or we are side swiping everyone with our trundle suitcases <\/i><\/span><\/div>\n
but worth a try, and we have a train to catch)<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n

We just make it onto the train, <\/span><\/div>\n
meeting up with daughter No 2 at Penn Station<\/span><\/div>\n
DH misses the train…  <\/span><\/div>\n

When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on.<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n
