In my garden are some antique Chinese doors<\/span><\/div>\n
Oh, the stories they could tell…<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
We found them in China in 2007 and had them restored.<\/span><\/div>\n
We were told they are mid-18th century elm wood doors.<\/span><\/div>\n
They now sit proudly at the back of our Melbourne garden.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
At the time we were living in Hong Kong<\/span><\/div>\n
and I was working for Las Vegas Sands,<\/span><\/div>\n
who were building the Venetian in Macau.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
I was also just about to get married<\/span><\/div>\n
as the Hong Kong Government made it very difficult<\/span><\/div>\n
for de facto relationships,<\/span><\/div>\n
even those who had lasted over twenty years<\/span><\/div>\n
with three children!<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
But that is a whole other story…<\/span><\/div>\n
We were looking for a wedding present\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
and this is what we chose.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Except that is not quite what we chose!<\/span><\/div>\n
As we were staying in Macau for the weekend,\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
we nipped across the border into China<\/span><\/div>\n
to hunt for a suitable Chinese antique wedding present<\/span><\/div>\n
Like you do!<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
We drove into the rugged rural countryside\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
until we reached the warehouse in Zhuhai,<\/span><\/div>\n
a city in the Pearl River Delta.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
It was a bit of an overwhelming prospect\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
as we were greeted by a\u00a0<\/span>70,000 square foot warehouse\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
with 20,000 dusty,\u00a0<\/span>dilapidated and frankly rather grotty bits of furniture.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
We hunted through room after room searching…\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
You needed an eye for the possible and huge amount of belief<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
that your money would turn into something lovely.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
It was hard not to get side tracked<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
and some day I will share with you\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
some of the other treasures\u00a0<\/span><\/span>we amassed that day.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
We worked with an interpreter<\/span><\/div>\n
to explain how we wanted each piece of furniture restored.<\/span><\/div>\n
There was some utter confusion and disbelief at some of our Western choices.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Our doors had Chinese writing\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
which was immediately impressed upon us would be removed,<\/span><\/div>\n
tidied up during the restoration.<\/span><\/div>\n
‘But I love the Chinese writing, it has to stay’<\/span><\/div>\n
‘You want Chinese writing?’<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Both the translator and the Chinese tradesman<\/span><\/div>\n
seemed perplexed by this decision,<\/span><\/div>\n
to keep what was, in essence, Chinese graffiti on our doors.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Apparently, it says<\/span><\/div>\n
‘Whoever dumped these doors, must remove them immediately’<\/span><\/div>\n
‘Yes, I love the writing, can you make it darker?’<\/span><\/div>\n
‘Darker?’ they both questioned.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
The next problem was the wonderful rusted door latches<\/span><\/div>\n
‘Don’t worry, we give you new latches’<\/span><\/div>\n
‘No!’\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
‘No new, keep old’<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
There was much scratching of heads<\/span><\/div>\n
we are told to keep the old latches will cost more money, more work<\/span><\/div>\n
They clearly think we are bonkers,<\/span><\/div>\n
but apart from exchanged glances between our interpreter and the workman<\/span><\/div>\n
they politely adhered to our requests<\/span><\/div>\n
and the old adage\u00a0that the customer is always right!<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Keep graffiti and rusty old latches,<\/span><\/div>\n
you could just imagine the conversations that night<\/span><\/div>\n
when these Chinese men told their families!<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
We paid our money and left and surprisingly a few weeks later the\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
heavy Chinese doors appeared at our Hong Kong front door.<\/span><\/div>\n
We never unwrapped them, and months later<\/span><\/div>\n
they went in our shipping container to Australia.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
When we renovated our Melbourne house<\/span><\/div>\n
the house and garden were planned with the doors in mind.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
At night time we have the doors lit<\/span><\/div>\n
it is a constant and joyful reminder of our past life in Asia<\/span><\/div>\n
but they also became\u00a0<\/span>the symbol of the gateway\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
into our new life in Australia.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Of course, if we ever move,\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
our favourite Chinese doors\u00a0<\/span>will have to come with us.<\/span><\/div>\n
