The Bolin Bolin Billabong walk<\/a> <\/span><\/div>\n
is my favourite Melbourne Walk.<\/span><\/div>\n
Start and finish at Bulleen Park: <\/span><\/div>\n
175 Bulleen Road, Bulleen, VIC, Australia<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n
<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Bolin Bolin Billabong<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
It is practically a city walk, <\/span><\/div>\n
and is one of the few remaining <\/span>billabongs <\/span>in an urban setting.<\/span><\/div>\n
Apart from the hum of traffic, from the nearby Eastern freeway,<\/span><\/div>\n
once you are walking alongside our mighty Yarra river <\/span><\/div>\n
you could be way more remote.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
This combination of wetland and woodland walks<\/span><\/div>\n
just screams Australian beauty to me.<\/span><\/div>\n

Yarra river, Bulleen<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
The Yarra river is to Melbourne<\/span><\/div>\n
What the Thames is to London,<\/span><\/div>\n
and the Seine is to Paris.<\/span><\/div>\n
She is an icon.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Yarra river Bulleen<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
When the river reaches our city centre, <\/span><\/div>\n
she is the undisputed heart <\/span>of one of the world’s most liveable cities.<\/span><\/div>\n
Southbank is our city’s bustling waterfront hub,<\/span><\/div>\n
with many restaurants, hotels and apartments,<\/span><\/div>\n
 all competing <\/span>for a look-see over the water.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
Whilst in downtown Melbourne, <\/span><\/div>\n
all eyes are on our Yarra River,<\/span><\/div>\n
here in Bulleen she runs free, natural and untamed.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

A billabong is a Wurundjeri word <\/span><\/div>\n
and is formed when an isolated pond is left behind <\/span><\/div>\n
after the river changes course. <\/span><\/div>\n
In this case around 1100AD.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
Bolin Bolin is generally accepted to come from the aboriginal words <\/span><\/div>\n
Buln Buln meaning lyrebird.<\/span><\/div>\n

Manna Gum Bulleen Park by Simon Horburgh<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
There are many animals within the parklands,<\/span><\/div>\n
but I don’t generally get to see them with the Crazy Poodle.<\/span><\/div>\n
This is a great dog walk as the whole area is one massive offlead adventure.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n
<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Gum trees overlooking the archery fields<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
Giant red river gums flank the river<\/span><\/div>\n
this is one of the most intact Red Gum wetland areas around. <\/span><\/div>\n
The many varieties of eucalyptus trees are amongst the stunning,<\/span><\/div>\n
indigenous trees and plants found here, <\/span> <\/span><\/div>\n
nestled alongside the exotic plantings of the European influence.<\/span><\/div>\n
This area would be a painters dream!<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
I love that this area is a sacred and special place <\/span><\/div>\n
for indigenous people.<\/span><\/div>\n
As you walk in the footsteps of the Wurundjeri people <\/span><\/div>\n
you will sense the history.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Information boards give you more information<\/span><\/div>\n
and highlight <\/span>some of the wildlife and <\/span><\/div>\n
flora and fauna that you will encounter.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
Bolin Bolin was one of the biggest billabongs in the area. <\/span><\/div>\n
It was a significant ritual meeting place for Kulin nation gatherings <\/span><\/div>\n
Each April\/May <\/span>for many thousands of years.<\/span><\/div>\n
up to 1000 people would gather here <\/span><\/div>\n
 enjoying the seasonal abundance of food in the area<\/span><\/div>\n
with plentiful supplies of kangaroo, wallabies and eels<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

The Yarra River flats now are home to many sporting clubs.<\/span><\/div>\n
On any one weekend this area is again a meeting place for locals<\/span><\/div>\n
whether you are shooting a bow and arrow, <\/span>
flying a model aircraft, <\/span>
or playing Australian Rules football, soccer or cricket <\/span>
at one of the many sporting ovals.<\/span>

<\/span><\/div>\n
As far as I know none of these sports clubs <\/span>
offer anything more exotic <\/span>than a sausage to eat,<\/span>
 eel on the menu has long gone!<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
