Tourist horse and carriage rides have been plodding through the <\/span>
streets of our city <\/span>for around thirty years.<\/span>
Together with our trams <\/span>
they are iconic Melbourne transport.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
For $100 AUD you can take a half hour ride <\/span><\/div>\n
from Melbourne Flinders Street station <\/span><\/div>\n
to the Shrine of <\/span>Remembrance.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
It is not cheap,<\/span><\/div>\n
but I’m sure it would be lovely,<\/span><\/div>\n
unless that is, <\/span><\/div>\n
you start worrying about the condition the animals are kept in…<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

There is a bit of a rumpus going on at the moment<\/span><\/span>
between those concerned about animal welfare,<\/span><\/span>
who are a large and ever growing group,<\/span><\/span>
and the rest of Melbourne. <\/span><\/span>

The pro horse and carriage Melbournians<\/span><\/span>
like seeing the horses on the streets,<\/span><\/p>\n

believe they are well cared for,<\/span><\/div>\n

and consider them a wonderful tourist attraction to be preserved.<\/span><\/span>

<\/span><\/span>The Melbourne Against Horse Drawn Carriages<\/span><\/span>
are concerned that the horses work long hours, <\/span><\/span>
in all weathers, including searing summer heat,<\/span><\/span>
and are subjected to all the fumes and pollution of the CBD,<\/span><\/span>
amongst other things…<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n

In 2011 our Melbourne City Council introduced a code of practice <\/span><\/span>
for the operation of horse drawn carriages,<\/span><\/span>
 in response to growing questions about the industry.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

Today we found a long line of horse and carriages, <\/span><\/div>\n
It has been a wet and wild week here in Melbourne,<\/span>
so maybe not the most popular day for an open carriage ride? <\/span>
Even with the nice woolly blankets which are on offer!<\/span>

The horses don’t look too miserable, or poorly cared for,<\/span>
But they do look extremely bored!<\/span>

<\/span>This horse decides to add to the wet conditions under foot <\/span>
and flood Swanston Street!<\/span>
They are obviously being well watered…!<\/span><\/div>\n

We are not alone having a horse furore!<\/span><\/div>\n
On our recent visit to New York city<\/span><\/div>\n
we found there is a similar debate.<\/span><\/div>\n
As there is in other cities worldwide<\/span><\/div>\n
Such as Vienna, Rome and Montreal.<\/span><\/div>\n

Where ever you are in the world<\/span><\/div>\n
if you see a horse and carriage <\/span><\/div>\n
it is likely that you might take a picture.<\/span><\/div>\n
How many of us have similar snaps?<\/span><\/div>\n

There is something very photogenic <\/span><\/div>\n

the livelihoods of their human owners,<\/span><\/div>\n
are well cared for…<\/span><\/div>\n

Horse & Carriage Rides in the City of Melbourne should be BANNED <\/strong>and <\/span>replaced with human-powered cycle rickshaws<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Human power is used the world over,<\/span><\/div>\n
you only have to think of India’s rickshaw drivers <\/span><\/div>\n
or the pedal bike carriages as seen in New York’s Central Park.<\/span><\/div>\n
