Now did you ever imagine when you put on your undies<\/span><\/div>\n
 this morning that in decades to come<\/span><\/div>\n
they might be being admired<\/span><\/div>\n
by four ladies from different parts of the globe?<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
Me neither!<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\n
This was exactly what I found myself doing<\/span><\/div>\n
recently when I visited the Yarra Park Costume Collection!<\/span>

<\/span><\/div>\n

The bloomers were from the Great Depression era c 1930<\/span>
and probably made from an old sheet.<\/span><\/div>\n

What caught our attention was the delicate hand stitched flower <\/span>
and some lace around the legs.<\/span>

<\/span><\/div>\n
There was a whole lot more knicker <\/span>
than you and I would probably wear today!<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/a><\/div>\n


<\/span><\/div>\n

\n
The undies are part of the personal introduction <\/span>
 given to her costume collection<\/span> by owner Loel Thompson, <\/span>
‘<\/span>and not very well made either’<\/i> she adds.<\/span>

<\/span>It’s a clever way to grab your attention <\/span>
especially as Loel contrasts the sheet knickers with a delicate<\/span> trousseau<\/span><\/div>\n
 Every piece in the collection<\/span><\/div>\n
has a story to tell.<\/span><\/div>\n
There is a story about the owner, <\/span>
the period in history,<\/span><\/div>\n
and very often a story about <\/span>
how these particular garments found themselves in Australia<\/span>
and then a final one, about how they came to be in Loel’s collection.<\/span>

<\/span>She has learned to be discerning<\/span>
…and is often offered wedding dresses galore!<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

The museum is a hidden gem<\/span><\/div>\n
It was purpose built and tucked away in an industrial part of Bulleen,<\/span>
a suburb of Melbourne.<\/span>
It is open by appointment <\/span>
and entry is in exchange for a donation to charity.<\/span>

<\/span>Which is how through our School’s International Parent group<\/span>
that I ended up four Australian, Indian, British and Persian friends<\/span>
admiring fashions through the ages.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n


<\/span>The clothes and accessories are staged into decades<\/span>
with period pieces of furniture to further enhance the story.<\/span>

<\/span>We were fascinated by this 1890’s china tea cup <\/span>
with moustache rest!<\/span>

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n


<\/span>
Some of the clothes didn’t seem so old fashioned to me …<\/span>
but I saw my friends looking long and hard.<\/span>

<\/span>I look at each of us each brought up with different <\/span>
fashions, customs and lifestyles.<\/span>
We had such contrasts as to what we <\/span>
would have considered the height of fashion as we grew up.<\/span>
Even today, all dressing ‘Aussie’<\/span>
we have kept some respect for the fashions of our heritage<\/span>
Whether it is a love of bright clothes and silks<\/span>
or some jewellery that was originally bought overseas.<\/span>

<\/span>Maybe it was a Sari or a Middle Eastern veil<\/span>
I remember longing for a pair of green Hunter wellington boots,<\/span>
every country British kid would have a pair of wellies!<\/span>

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n


<\/span>We had such a lovely morning,<\/span>
given we were all brought up on many different continents<\/span>
it was fascinating seeing which clothes resonated with each of us.<\/span>
Ohh Mary Quant tights – did you have these in India? <\/i><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span>We were so lucky to have had the opportunity<\/span>
for a private tour of The Costume Collection<\/span>
