I live in a great street in Melbourne.<\/span><\/div>\n
It is certainly not the best street in our suburb…<\/span><\/div>\n
We’re down the hill from the posh houses <\/span>of the Golden mile<\/span> <\/span><\/div>\n
and up from the railway line.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
It is good.<\/span><\/div>\n
We get the runoff from the posh peoples’ watering systems<\/span><\/div>\n
and we’re closer to the train station in the morning.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
OK let’s be honest <\/span><\/div>\n
so, we’re a long way from the posh houses, <\/span><\/div>\n
and live on top of the railway line…<\/span><\/div>\n
We love our street!<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
We have a street Christmas party where all the neighbours are invited<\/span><\/div>\n
and we have a pretty good Neighbourhood Watch<\/i> thing happening.<\/span><\/div>\n
We do each others bins, mail and pets when we travel<\/span><\/div>\n
and the big kids babysit the little kids.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
When a house is sold we all turn out to see who is moving in.<\/span><\/div>\n
When the new people buy and bulldose a house<\/span><\/div>\n
It’s impromptu street party time.<\/span><\/div>\n
We’re are all out there with interest!<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
It’s not that easy buying your perfect dream house in Melbourne.<\/span><\/div>\n
For a start it’s consistently voted one of the world’s most liveable cities.<\/span><\/div>\n
Supply and demand has lead to an over inflated housing market.<\/span><\/div>\n
The Global Financial Crisis did little to quell the market <\/span>buoyancy.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
Sometimes the only way in to the fancy suburbs<\/span><\/div>\n
 is to buy a knockdown and build!<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
We’ve gathered to mourn the loss of a house in the street,<\/span><\/div>\n
it’s a historic moment.<\/span><\/div>\n
Neighbours recount stories of previous occupants.<\/span><\/div>\n
As the house goes down <\/span><\/div>\n
we see the garden emerge behind<\/span><\/div>\n
where the chickens used to escape from their chicken coup<\/span><\/div>\n
and where the foxes<\/span><\/div>\n
straight from the railway tracks, used to run amuck.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
We are joined by our street family of rainbow lorikeets.<\/span><\/div>\n
They fly from tree to tree squawking in dismay<\/span><\/div>\n
wondering what all the commotion is about.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
So there we all are.<\/span><\/div>\n
Neighbourhood Watch all lined up.<\/span><\/div>\n
Until someone says<\/span><\/div>\n
‘Let’s hope they did <\/b>remove all that <\/i><\/span>asbestos!’<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
and amidst a cloud of dust<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
we cheerily wave our goodbyes<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
to get on with our day.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

By the time I return<\/span><\/div>\n
She’s gone.<\/span><\/div>\n
All that remains of her hundred years of history<\/span><\/div>\n
is some scrap metal<\/span><\/div>\n
Propped<\/span><\/span> up against the fence<\/span>.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
The place is eerily quiet<\/span><\/div>\n
no trains, no birds, no house, no nothing…<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
Well, all that is about to change.<\/span><\/div>\n
We are happy a very nice family are building their dream house.<\/span><\/div>\n
We are fortunate they have chosen to do this<\/span><\/div>\n
rather than subdivide<\/span><\/div>\n
like many of the blocks around here.<\/span><\/div>\n

The building has started<\/span><\/div>\n
It’s going to be huge.<\/span><\/div>\n
Neighbourhood Watch is chuffed.<\/span><\/div>\n
