With the footy Grand Final behind us <\/span><\/div>\n
Melbourne turns her attention,<\/span><\/div>\n
with a nod of a stylish fascinator,<\/span><\/div>\n
to the start of the <\/span>Victorian<\/span> <\/span>Spring Racing Carnival.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
Today was the Thousand Guineas,<\/span><\/div>\n
one of the big horse races of the season,<\/span><\/div>\n
but I didn’t go.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
I am hatless <\/span><\/div>\n
and we are horseless<\/span>!<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
For the past five years <\/span><\/div>\n
 we have enjoyed life at the races as a bit part Owner.<\/span><\/div>\n
We never had more than a hoof and a tail…<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
Twelve months ago<\/span> our horse <\/span><\/div>\n
was even entered for<\/span> the Caulfield Thousand Guineas <\/span><\/div>\n
at one point.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
What a difference a year makes!<\/span><\/div>\n
Today are at home watching the race on the television.<\/span><\/div>\n
The crazy poodle goes bananas<\/span><\/div>\n
barking at the horses.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He had an unfortunate experience as a youngster<\/span><\/div>\n
when he <\/span>disgraced himself with excitement <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
originally over a chicken on the run,<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
but the whole moment turned completely sour when<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
he realised he also had the attention of twenty elite thoroughbreds…<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
The crazy poodle has never <\/span>forgotten,<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
and neither have we!<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
This week our current horse was sold.<\/span><\/div>\n
Little Miss Hussy is off to enjoy life as a brood mare.<\/span><\/div>\n
We will be keeping a very close eye on her future foals.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
So Mr Wren wants another one…<\/span><\/div>\n
Our trainer wants us to have another one…<\/span><\/div>\n
but how to pick out the diamond in the rough<\/span><\/div>\n
that is the question?<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
When you enter the world of racehorse ownership<\/span><\/div>\n
you have to consider it an investment in <\/span><\/div>\n
the Victorian racing community <\/span>with no likely returns,<\/span><\/div>\n
rather like throwing money down the drain.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n
Or, like buying a lottery ticket.<\/span><\/div>\n
You hope that you will be leaping up and down <\/span><\/div>\n
at the finishing line <\/span>yelling ‘bingo’<\/span><\/div>\n
Or perhaps something a tad more appropriate…<\/span><\/div>\n
Hugging and kissing the other owners <\/span><\/div>\n
with big smile on your faces <\/span><\/div>\n
whilst the TV cameras capture all the excitement.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
And we did!<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n
<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Unfortunately this was not one of her trophies!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Our thoroughbred filly<\/span><\/div>\n

was a winner – bless her.<\/span>
We got a taste of being in the winner enclosure.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
She won $120,000 AUD in prize money<\/span><\/div>\n
from two wins, a second and a third.<\/span>
Until she was retired through injury.<\/span>
She was sold for double what we paid for her.<\/span>

<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n


<\/span><\/div>\n

We have just received a cheque for our part of her sale<\/span>
it covers all the expenses incurred in the two years of ownership<\/span><\/div>\n
plus some extra.<\/span>

<\/span>This is extremely lucky.<\/span>
Mr Wren wants another one…<\/span>
Wren has a whole shopping list, <\/span>
but can’t see racehorse on there!<\/span>
