Prague is a popular tourist destination and is the <em><strong>7<\/strong><\/em><i><strong>th most visited city in Europe according<\/strong><\/i>\u00a0to <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.traveltrivia.com\/most-visited-cities-in-europe\/\">Travel Trivia<\/a><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_beautiful_city\"><\/span><strong>A beautiful city:<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It is easy to see why&#8230; The city was relatively untouched by World War II bombs and everywhere you look there are amazing buildings. Our room is lovely with chocolate on our pillow, although there is a very stern looking large painting of General with a sword above our bed!\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>We find the location to be excellent, this is a city for wandering and exploring. Breakfast was great.<\/div>\n<div><strong><em><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">It is easy to see why this hotel is consistently voted in the top 10 Luxury hotels in Prague.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"FREE_WALKING_TOURS\"><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freetour.com\">FREE WALKING TOURS:<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<div id=\"license-plate\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"address\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We join one of those free walking tours, the sort that you tip at the end according to your means and enjoyment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Stormy clouds gather overhead and we start at the famous\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prague.eu\/cs\/objekt\/mista\/93\/karluv-most\"><b>Charles Bridge<\/b>\u00a0<\/a>at sunset. As the day turns to night the twinkling lights from the castle beckon us upwards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The tour takes us through the <strong>Lesser town<\/strong>, meandering our way up through the ancient cobbled streets, through grand squares with huge Palaces, up to the sprawling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrad.cz\/en\/prague-castle-for-visitors\"><strong>Prague Castle<\/strong>.<\/a> It is impressive and magical.<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"OLD_TOWN_SQUARE\"><\/span><strong>OLD TOWN SQUARE:<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<div id=\"attachment_3372\" style=\"width: 651px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3372\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3372 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/staging\/8794\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Prague1.jpg?resize=641%2C960&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"641\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/staging\/8794\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Prague1.jpg?w=641&amp;ssl=1 641w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/staging\/8794\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Prague1.jpg?resize=200%2C300&amp;ssl=1 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 641px) 100vw, 641px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3372\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The famous Old Town Hall Clock Tower in the heart of Prague.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The next day we are off to join another free walking tour to see the <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 14px;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.freetour.com\/prague\/free-tour-of-prague\">Old Town and Jewish quarter.<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"> We meet at the\u00a0<\/span><b style=\"font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Old Town Square<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0and for the first time bump into hordes of tourists waiting for the\u00a0<\/span><b style=\"font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Astronomical Clock<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0to perform its hourly party trick.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"s1\">Every hour on the hour, from 8 am to 8 pm, wooden saints emerge from trap doors, while below them, a lesson in medieval morality is enacted by Greed, Vanity, Death and the Turk. It takes some explanation to figure out the complicated zodiac figures on the clock&#8217;s face, reputedly there are some occult mysteries encoded in them&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"s1\">Where ever we turn there is something interesting to look at&#8230; The city&#8217;s multilayer history dates back to the Holy Roman Empire. It was a time in the Country&#8217;s dark history full of paranoia, spying and violence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"s1\">Part of the daily life was the fear of nuclear war. Facilities were built, which could be used to hide the civil population and save citizens from the radioactivity brought by nuclear bombs and long-range missiles. Daily life was one coping with incessant false alarms and training with gas masks and atomic suits&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"s1\">On our final day we retrace our steps to see a few things we missed when first passing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>LOVERS LOCKS:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"s1\">If you walk along the Mala Strana, near the Lennon Wall, in Prague you will see small locks on the gate over the canal. Legend has it that when you find your true love you carve your names on a lock and lock it onto the gate. You then throw the key into the canal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"s1\">It&#8217;s amazing how almost every city has adopted this idea. Until of course they get too heavy and cause a problem where they are situated, or all the keys thrown in the water cause water pollution and kill the fish!<\/span><\/p>\n<h6 class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"John_Lennon_wall\"><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b>John Lennon wall:<\/b><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>John Lennon wall<\/b>\u00a0was an ordinary wall until it was covered with John Lennon graffiti and Beatles lyrics. The Wall represents a monument to free speech and the non-violent rebellion of Czech youth against the regime. Traditional Czech food is quite heavily meat based, but it is all washed down with a pint of the brown, frothy stuff.
