January was always going to be a cracker of a sporting month!<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
We’ve got a tennis grand slam <\/span><\/div>\n
and Asia’s most significant football tournament<\/span><\/div>\n
happening in this household at the moment.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
We are volunteering at the Asian Cup, <\/span><\/div>\n
whilst housing for the Australian Open.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
Talk about busy and exciting!<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
So you will find me on match days <\/span><\/div>\n
 nattily dressed <\/span>in a pair of bright orange <\/span><\/div>\n
“does my bum look big in this?”<\/i> shorts<\/span><\/div>\n
down at Melbourne’s Rectangular Stadium<\/span>.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
I am, <\/span>in case you wondered, <\/span><\/div>\n
supposedly dressed<\/span><\/div>\n
to look like a ray of Australian sunshine.<\/span><\/div>\n
How lovely I hear you say!<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
I’m not sure whether we are the only family <\/span><\/div>\n
who are volunteering together,<\/span><\/div>\n
but needless to say, <\/span><\/div>\n
my son and daughter both look terrific in their uniforms,<\/span><\/div>\n
and me, well…<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Not since daughter Number 2 was eighteen months old<\/span><\/div>\n
have we been decked out in the same attire.<\/span><\/div>\n
I have a feeling that it might be another twenty years<\/span><\/div>\n
before this historic event repeats itself…<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
As a sport, and especially a soccer mad family, <\/span><\/div>\n
it felt important to support the biggest football event <\/span><\/div>\n
ever to come to our shores.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Our weekends through out winter are dominated by football matches.<\/span><\/div>\n
On a really busy weekend we could have up to five games<\/span><\/div>\n
that we’re involved with as a family;<\/span><\/div>\n
playing, coaching and volunteering<\/span>.<\/span><\/div>\n
So we were chuffed<\/span><\/div>\n
 to be selected as volunteers at the Asian Cup.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
So far over 250,000 people across the five Australian host cities <\/span><\/div>\n
have enjoyed <\/span>the AFC Asian Cup.<\/span><\/div>\n
There are sixteen countries involved.<\/span><\/div>\n
Each one brings something unique and different to the spirit of the match.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
We have all loved the multi-cultural, fun crowds<\/span><\/div>\n
who have come here from all over Australia and the world.<\/span><\/div>\n
I have met fans from Kuwait, Bahrain, Palestine and Jordan.<\/span><\/div>\n
A special mention goes to Iran for their high energy crowd.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
I also rather loved the crowd participation at the North Korean match<\/span><\/div>\n
who seeing the team trailing behind on goals <\/span><\/div>\n
rallied behind<\/span> the modest group of North Koreans supporters.<\/span><\/div>\n
Who were soon <\/span>swamped by cheering Aussie fans.<\/span><\/div>\n
They may have lost badly to Saudi Arabia <\/span><\/div>\n
but the North Koreans won the hearts of the crowd.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
There are not many cities of the world that can offer,<\/span><\/div>\n
as Melbourne can this week, <\/span><\/div>\n
two or three International sporting events on opposite sides of the street.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
So ok that street is admittedly an Olympic Boulevard<\/span><\/div>\n
but I think it must be the best sporting precinct in the world?<\/span><\/div>\n
 You can watch tennis <\/span><\/div>\n
at the Australian Open <\/span>by day <\/span><\/div>\n
and by night Asia’s biggest celebration of football.<\/span><\/div>\n

Tonight, we added cricket at the Melbourne Cricket Ground <\/span><\/div>\n
with the one day international between Australia and India.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
You can see why they call Melbourne <\/span><\/div>\n
the sporting capital of the world!<\/span><\/div>\n
