Hello Japan here last week!<\/div>\n

<\/span><\/h3>\n

I hardly had time to wash the sheets!<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
We had three lovely lasses from Japan move in.<\/span><\/div>\n
Staying with us for nearly a month studying English.<\/span><\/div>\n
Welcome to the madhouse<\/strike> your new Aussie family!<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n
<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
I love having the Japanese girls to stay!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
This is the 7th year we’ve had students from this <\/span>particular Tokyo l<\/span>adies college.<\/span><\/div>\n
 They are always a DELIGHT.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
I do love hosting overseas students on their first visit <\/span>Down Under<\/span>.<\/span><\/div>\n
I see Melbourne anew through their eyes.<\/span><\/div>\n
They are full of WONDER at everything.<\/span><\/div>\n
I mean let’s face it, even a tub of yoghurt <\/span><\/div>\n
from another country can look exotic. <\/span><\/div>\n
What do you think?<\/span><\/div>\n

Yoghurt and fruit with Japanese green tea lollies and KitKat!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
A few things are a tad “awks” as the kids would say.<\/span><\/div>\n
I gave up my Mother Wren, bear hug of a Aussie greeting<\/span><\/div>\n
many students ago…<\/span><\/div>\n
Yes, we’ve had over thirty Japanese students over the years.<\/span><\/div>\n
Did I say I LOVE THE JAPANESE?!<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
They seemed to find the hello hug, <\/span>being pressed to the welcoming bossom <\/span><\/div>\n
of some crazy Aussie Mumma, <\/span>when they’d only just arrived, <\/span><\/div>\n
and didn’t know which way was up,<\/span>was well, <\/span><\/div>\n
let’s just say<\/span><\/div>\n
a little too confronting!<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
So now I offer the formal British handshake.<\/span><\/div>\n
Think royal limp wrist to limp wrist and you get the picture<\/span><\/div>\n
We’re very regal in our greeting.<\/span><\/div>\n
In fact come to think of it they might not curtsy<\/span><\/div>\n
but I’m sure there is a slight bow in there.<\/span><\/div>\n
RESPECT! Love it!<\/span><\/div>\n

Or maybe it’s the bow of horror??<\/span><\/div>\n
They are probably thinking “OMG, a month with her,<\/i>“<\/span><\/div>\n
looking at my chipped nail polish…<\/span><\/div>\n
I bow back slowly studying their band new shoes<\/span>,<\/span><\/div>\n
trying to program my brain<\/span><\/div>\n
with the nuances of the correct pronunciation of their names.<\/span><\/div>\n

I do bring the bear hug in for the goodbyes… <\/span><\/div>\n
Old habits d<\/span>ie hard!<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n
<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Sunshine and shadows!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
The first thing we did together was enjoy a walk to the park,<\/span><\/div>\n
appreciating <\/span>the warmth and sunshine <\/span><\/div>\n
of an Aussie summers day.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
It’s a welcome contrast to a Tokyo winter.<\/span><\/div>\n
Before long I find myself joining in their laughter <\/span><\/div>\n
and we’re all making shadow rabbit faces in the sunshine.<\/span><\/div>\n

On the way home we bump into my neighbour<\/span><\/div>\n
More ‘hellos and welcome to Melbourne!’<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
My neighbour has her arm in a sling<\/span><\/div>\n
 having broken her wrist<\/span><\/div>\n
rollerblading with the kids.<\/span><\/div>\n
Right wrist of course and she’s right handed.<\/span><\/div>\n
Rather severe break in fact, no driving.<\/span><\/div>\n
Everything is difficult with only one hand.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
Of course we in the street are impressed<\/span><\/div>\n
“Aren’t you a little too old for this?” <\/i><\/span><\/div>\n
we question, unhelpfully.<\/span><\/div>\n
Just jealous. <\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
When was the last time I rollerbladed with the kids?<\/span><\/div>\n
Never!<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“If there is anything you need this week<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n
I’m here for you…<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n
books covered, opening a jar of pesto.<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n
Just ask.”<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n

She smiles,<\/span><\/div>\n
 both of us remembering the last help requested… <\/span><\/div>\n

I heard my DH on the phone<\/span><\/div>\n
“Of course, she’ll be right round,<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n
No, it’s no trouble”<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n

It’s Men’s Semi Final night at the Australian Open<\/span><\/div>\n
Andy Murray is playing Berdych.<\/span><\/div>\n
We’ve been invited to the Men’s tennis Final <\/span><\/div>\n
and we’re hoping it’s Murray vs Djokovic.<\/span><\/div>\n
That night we had a houseful for a <\/span><\/div>\n
‘cheering for Andy’<\/i><\/span> dinner!<\/span><\/div>\n

I wasn’t really concentrating<\/span><\/div>\n
That’s my excuse!<\/span><\/div>\n
Do I let on that air bubbles in school books is <\/span><\/div>\n
a normal occurrence in our household, <\/span><\/div>\n
and get out a pin, to prick the air out of the bubble?<\/span><\/div>\n

Whilst deliberating on this, my son shouts<\/span><\/div>\n
‘Mum the Apple pie’s burning!<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n

Although secretly thinking PERFECT, <\/span><\/div>\n
now it definitely looks like a home baked Apple pie!<\/span><\/div>\n
