This week we’re celebrating thirty years <\/span><\/div>\n
of our local Melbourne TV show,<\/span><\/div>\n
Neighbours.<\/i><\/span>

<\/i><\/span>But how true to Aussie life is Neighbours?!<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

“Neighbours<\/a><\/em> <\/span>is set in Ramsay Street, <\/span>a residential cul-de-sac in the fictional Melbourne suburb of Erinsborough. <\/span>Exploring the trials and tribulations of families and friends, <\/span>Neighbours<\/em> brings the perfect blend of soap and sunshine <\/span>to audiences in Australia and beyond”. <\/span>Today I thought I’d take you along with the Crazy Poodle, on a little local walkabout.<\/span>
Now the first striking difference between my neighbours and <\/span>
those in Erinsborough is <\/span>we don’t live in a cul-de-sac<\/span>
and we like Good Fences<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed, rather big fences round our properties!<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/b>Secondly, if I was the script <\/span>writer for<\/span> <\/span>Neighbours<\/i>
They’d be way more animals on set.<\/span>
Every second house around here <\/span>
has a dog’s nose peering at you from somewhere!<\/span>

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n


<\/span>The real Erinsborough, Vermont South<\/span>
Is about 20 mins drive from us<\/span>
Although our claim to fame is that the Kylie’s parents (of Charlene fame)<\/span>
live about three streets away in the posh houses up the hill.<\/span>

<\/span>Our neighbourhood is a real mixture of housing,<\/span>
 old and new, the posh and waiting to be rebuilt..<\/span>.<\/span>

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n


<\/span>Although we live next door to each other,<\/span>
unlike the real Neighbours<\/i>,<\/span>
we don’t especially know the ‘ins and outs’ of each others lives,<\/span>
births, deaths and marriages aside…<\/span>

<\/span>Indeed in our street<\/span>
We have to make a real effort to see each other.<\/span>
We have the street Christmas party <\/span>
to see people we haven’t seen all year,<\/span>
and generally every few months, <\/span>us ladies do lunch to ‘catch up.’<\/span>

<\/span>However, having said that, <\/span>
we’re a pretty effective Neighbourhood Watch<\/i> team.<\/span>
Word travels superfast if there’s any funny business about town!<\/span>
Plus the dogs tell us.<\/span>

<\/span>Thirdly we don’t need a script writer<\/span>
Truth can be weirder than fiction…<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

It’s not to say that we’re not without drama in our street,<\/span>
but most is played out behind closed doors,<\/span>
 without a TV crew.<\/span>

<\/span>However there was the night, many moons ago<\/span>
 I’m in my Qantas PJ’s, in the front garden <\/span>
investigating a small fracas in the street.<\/span>
Woken by shouting and six police cars, sirens off but lights flashing<\/span>
causing a riotous disco at 2am.<\/span>

<\/span>We didn’t know our local Constabulary owned six police cars!<\/span>

<\/span>I shall spare the blushes of my fellow neighbours, now long gone…<\/span> <\/span>

<\/span>“Everything all right Officer<\/i>?” I say to the Policeman<\/span>
wishing I’d put my dressing gown on! <\/span>
“Everything’s fine,<\/i><\/span>
Just go back inside”<\/i><\/span>
He replies as he handcuffs my neighbour to my fence<\/span>
I wanted to say ‘wrong fence,<\/i>‘ but think better of it and <\/span>
shuffle off back up the drive in my slippers…<\/span>

<\/span>When I hear a loud “Psssst, <\/i><\/span>w<\/span>hat’s going on?<\/i>” <\/span>
another neighbour asks, <\/span>
crouching low amongst her shrubbery?”<\/span>

<\/span>‘Goodness Gracious me! <\/i><\/span>
You scared the living daylights out of me. <\/i><\/span>
What on earth are you doing in the flower beds?’<\/i><\/span>

<\/span>‘I only came out to water the roses…She replies in a low whisper<\/i><\/span>
and now look what’s happened!!!<\/i>‘<\/span>

<\/span>‘You’re Ok, <\/i><\/span>
I don’t think you’re going to get done <\/i><\/span>
for breaching the water restrictions tonight…”<\/i><\/span>
I whisper back<\/span>

<\/span>‘Sleep tight!’<\/i><\/span>
“You too, just as soon as the disco’s gone<\/i>!’ <\/span>

<\/span>I think that was the moment we became good friends.<\/span>

<\/span><\/p>\n
