Today we joined Australian and New Zealand communities <\/span><\/div>\n
all over the world <\/span>for an ANZAC Day dawn service.<\/span>

<\/span><\/p>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/div>\n

Our service was held at the Kranji War Memorial Cemetery, Singapore,<\/span><\/div>\n
 hosted by the Australian and New Zealand High Commissioners.<\/span><\/p>\n

We weren’t alone, we left our hotel at 5.30am,<\/span>
 and arrive in a steady convoy of taxis, <\/span>
it’s way too early for the trains!<\/span>

<\/span>We walk in silence.<\/span>

<\/span>The 4,500 gravestones at Kranji, <\/span>
emerge from the shadows<\/span>
in silent observation of events.<\/span>

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n


<\/span>Once there, it is a well organised, dignified affair.<\/span>
Public to the left and right,<\/span>
official guests and dignitaries, straight up the middle.<\/span><\/span>

<\/span>The Anzac Day dawn service is the same the world over;<\/span><\/span>
a military order, school children and scouts,<\/span><\/span>
national anthems, wreath layers from all walks of life<\/span><\/span>
and usually a slightly dodgy bugler or bagpipe players,<\/span><\/span><\/span>
and despite the former, a haunting last post.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
Followed by an uplifting Gunfire Breakfast.<\/span><\/span><\/span>

<\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

We love the familiarity.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
Even though we are new Australian citizens,<\/span><\/span><\/span>
the ANZAC dawn service is now something we do!<\/span><\/span>

<\/span><\/span>Last year Hong Kong<\/a>, this year Singapore,<\/span><\/span>
I whisper to my husband<\/span><\/span>
‘Let’s make sure 2016 is somewhere good too!’<\/i><\/span><\/span>

<\/span><\/span>We know our service here in Singapore <\/span><\/span><\/span>
will mirror services already held in Melbourne, Sydney and Auckland. <\/span><\/span><\/span>
The same words will be spoken for the 10,000 people <\/span>
who have made the journey over to Gallipoli, Turkey<\/span><\/span><\/span>
in this the centenary year.<\/span><\/span><\/span>

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n


<\/span><\/span><\/span>By 5.45 am it is standing room only.<\/span>
No-one complains.<\/span>
 A warm, muggy Singapore day <\/span>breaks,<\/span><\/span>
Whilst the School choir <\/span><\/span>launch into ‘Always Remember’, <\/span>
the birds chirp <\/span><\/span>their own loud dawn chorus from in the trees.<\/span>
Swifts stretch their wings,<\/span><\/span>
swooping and diving as if excited to see us.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

So what is this day that we are celebrating <\/span>
and why do we celebrate <\/span>
what the BBC describes as a military disaster<\/a>?!<\/span>

<\/span>Anzac Day is one of those days that our friends from far off lands <\/span><\/span>
often <\/span>know very little about. <\/span><\/span>
But for Aussies and Kiwis it is an important <\/span><\/span>
national day of <\/span>remembrance, <\/span>
a day in which the ANZAC spirit was forged.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/div>\n

\n
ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) Day <\/span>
is the anniversary of the landing of troops from Australia and New Zealand <\/span>
on the Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey, in World War I on April 25, 1915. <\/span>
The bravery of all military personnel who participated in this campaign <\/span>
and the lives of those who died in all military actions are remembered.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span>ANZAC day is celebrated Australia-wide,<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
we even get a day’s holiday in Victoria,<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n
provided April 25th does not fall on a weekend.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

We stand side by side with war veterans, <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
with current servicemen and women,<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
with families remembering their lost ones<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
Parents take their children to learn, to experience,<\/span><\/span>
to join an important commemoration from the Homeland.<\/span><\/span>
Not to be missed.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

We all reflect on the tragedy, <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
the sacrifice<\/span><\/span> and waste of war.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

This seems particularly <\/span><\/span>poignant in 2015,<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

the <\/span><\/span>centenary of Anzac Day.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

Away from all the action as the chairs are being tidied away<\/span><\/span>
a small gecko suns himself on the top of a tombstone.<\/span><\/span>
He carries his own war wound, his tail damaged.<\/span><\/span>

<\/span><\/span>I sit with him and wonder <\/span><\/span>if the world is learning.<\/span><\/p>\n

In recent days, <\/span><\/span><\/span>
we see news headlines of an alleged terrorist plot to attack <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
Anzac Day proceedings in my home city, Melbourne.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
Our Premier Daniel Andrews urged Victorians<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
to join in the ANZAC Dawn Services.<\/span><\/span>
To commemorate ANZAC Day and <\/span><\/span>sacrifices made,<\/span><\/div>\n
 so that we can live a free life.<\/span><\/span>

We listened, we turned out in record numbers this year across the globe.<\/span><\/span>
We pay tribute to all those who have served.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
