<\/span>It’s lovely to be back in the UK.<\/span><\/div>\n
Twenty-two years ago, we left for three years.<\/span><\/div>\n
Happily and reassuringly, the important things in life are still the same…<\/span><\/div>\n

1. Everything starts and finishes with the weather<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n
The weather is still the preferred, polite way<\/span><\/div>\n
to start any conversation…<\/span><\/div>\n
‘Morning, lovely day’.<\/i>..<\/span><\/div>\n
or ‘Hi ya, chilly today<\/i>‘…<\/span><\/div>\n
Usually the later! <\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
I note that England in Spring <\/span><\/div>\n
shares the<\/span> same temperatures this week <\/span><\/div>\n
with Melbourne in Autumn, 12<\/span>\u00baC  (54\u00baF)<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n
<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

over a cup of tea, poured from a teapot, milk first <\/span><\/div>\n
and a slice of Mum’s homemade date and walnut cake <\/span><\/div>\n
at 4pm, <\/span>is a not-be-missed event.<\/span><\/div>\n

3. Food!<\/b> <\/span><\/div>\n
You know when you’re a true Brit <\/b><\/span>when…<\/b> <\/span><\/div>\n

…a trip Sainsbury’s supermarket holds great excitement.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
 …twenty pence off malt loaf is a big deal, <\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
… your grin at finding a scotch egg at a funeral looks <\/span><\/div>\n
way too happy for the occasion, <\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
…Walkers salt and vinegar crisps, need I say more?!<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
You know when you’re a true Brit when…<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n
you still prefer Marmite <\/span>to the Aussie Vegemite!<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

4. British Humour<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n
You know you’re truly home when…<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
You can say the words ‘Murray mints’<\/i>, <\/span><\/div>\n
and know someone will reply:<\/span><\/div>\n
‘The too good to hurry mints!’<\/i><\/div>\n
To which you both then say <\/span><\/div>\n
‘Ha, Ha, Boom, Boom’<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n
knowing that <\/span>everyone will know you’re talking <\/span><\/div>\n

There is a whole lot of British sayings which <\/span><\/div>\n

and I’ll tell you about them<\/span><\/div>\n

5. All our cliches<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n
When I left England’s green and pleasant land, <\/span><\/div>\n
it was ‘to be honest,’<\/i><\/span> well green!<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
‘I can’t get my head around it’, <\/i><\/span>but,<\/span><\/div>\n
when did the countryside turn yellow? <\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
‘Actually,’<\/i> <\/span><\/div>\n
the o<\/span>ilseed rape with it’s bright yellow plants,<\/span><\/div>\n
is making a big impact these days… <\/span><\/div>\n
