I haven\u2019t been to church as often since I left the Convent in 1979.<\/span><\/div>\n
There I knew that would grab your attention…<\/span><\/div>\n

  You a convent girl? <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
I hear you chortle, Yes moi! <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\n
Although I have to confess Sister Mary Clare, <\/span>our Headmistress, <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
and I were never that close. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n

<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
She probably let out a long sigh of relief the day I left <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
to further my education elsewhere.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Her faith, hope and charity having been tested to the max!<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
\n
The ensuing years saw my church attendance limited <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
to three brief periods in which I returned to the fold,<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
although I must admit, blink and mere mortals may have missed it…<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Mr Wren calls these my hormonal days… <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
All co-inciding with being pregnant in the 80’s. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n

<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
I suppose I was searching for some inner calm, <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
an impossible ask really<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
 for ‘him upstairs’ with three kids under five….<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
\n

<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
My twenties and thirties became a blur of moving around the world.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Church attendence was restricted to increasingly infrequent<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
 weddings, with occasional christenings and funerals thrown in <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
you know… as and when. <\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n
<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
So I have been absent without leave.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Although I’m sure the door was always left open.<\/span><\/div>\n
Ermm, or maybe not.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\n
Well since I\u2019ve returned to the United Kingdom, <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
I\u2019ve found myself in back in several churches with increasing regularity. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
First there was a visit to my Grandfather’s grave <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
and then my Great Aunt’s funeral.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Where they announced the magnolia tree, outside <\/span><\/div>\n
was planted by our family <\/span>way back (see below)<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
\n
But perhaps of greater note are several recent visits to the <\/span><\/div>\n
Church of England, church of my youth,<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
before I went to the Catholic convent.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
I know, don’t ask.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
It’s got something to do with <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
‘the Nun’s were the only decent school that would take you’<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Not that we say that in public!<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\n
Here is the St Mary’s the Virgin church (above) <\/span><\/div>\n
where my friends and I once danced up the aisle… <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
aged 10 years and 3\/4 years old, <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
in a pink ballet tutu <\/span><\/div>\n
with black ballet shoes with satin ribbons.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Quite what the occasion was I don’t remember.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Surely it wasn\u2019t for Harvest Festival?! <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\n
I\u2019m suppose this would somehow be deemed highly inappropriate these days, <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
but those were the years in which we lived life on the edge,<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
 and sat in cars without seat belts you know.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
And so when we were all lined up in front of Sister Mary Clare,<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
for the statutory:<\/span><\/div>\n
 ‘Is your daughter of the faith?<\/i>‘ admission interview,<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
my father with his polished Armed Forces officers uniform on,<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
we could all nod enthusiastically with a <\/span><\/div>\n
‘yes of course, she’s regular in church<\/i>‘ <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n

Look, I’d best not fib, so when I say I\u2018m back, <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
I mean I\u2019m joining in the family church rota. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
The village divvy up the year, month by month, amongst themselves for <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Church Cleaning, Church Flowers, and <\/span>Church Gardening. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/a><\/div>\n

You’ll have of course already noted my Flower Arranging talents,<\/span><\/div>\n
if somewhat fledgling, from my previous posts.<\/span><\/div>\n
What I may not have told you was the fun I had, <\/span><\/div>\n
 teamed up with our old primary school caretaker.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
In hindsight this probably smacked of favouritism, <\/span><\/div>\n
or a last ditch attempt by my Mother, Festival Co-ordinator<\/span><\/div>\n
to ensure the gates of heaven are always open for me,<\/span><\/div>\n
by allocating us the altar!<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
My parents have been on the church rota for years, <\/span><\/div>\n
they never attend church <\/span>for any other purpose <\/span><\/div>\n
that to assist with the above, <\/span><\/div>\n
never have done. <\/span><\/div>\n
They no longer even live in the village\u2026<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
That\u2019s what I call being wonderfully community minded.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
So whilst I’ve been back<\/span><\/div>\n

The Church garden is really interesting to me<\/span><\/div>\n
because whilst there are some gorgeous flower beds<\/span><\/div>\n
some of the Churchyard has been left as a wildlife garden.<\/span><\/div>\n

It’s a beautiful English Country church garden<\/span><\/div>\n
