Love it, or hate it, it’s always great to be back in Honkers. <\/span><\/div>\n
It’s eight years since we left, yet I still get the ‘bright lights’ frisson of excitement, t<\/span>he moment I get off the plane. It’s when you feel that wall of humidity <\/span>hit, your hair gives you the real meaning of frizz-on, and that ‘Fragrant Harbour’ smell starts the assaults <\/span>on your senses. <\/span><\/div>\n

And you yell out in fine voice <\/span>‘Honey, I’m Home!<\/i>‘ <\/span><\/div>\n
and the polite crowd of Hong Kong Chinese around you, <\/span><\/div>\n
smile awkwardly and continue playing on their <\/span>I<\/i>phones. <\/span><\/div>\n
‘Oops, sorry, pardon me for my over-exuberance!’<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n

Two minutes in the Hotel check-in line, becomes two hours <\/span><\/div>\n
and all because you are handed your room key for two <\/span><\/div>\n
and told breakfast is for one. <\/span><\/div>\n
You ask whether you can have breakfast for two <\/span><\/div>\n
but your name is not on the list, <\/span><\/div>\n
so after much checking it is confirmed, with a nod, <\/span><\/div>\n
‘yes, one included breakfast only<\/i>‘.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
and it all comes flooding back…<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
You are in the land of rules is rules and ‘don’t make a fuss’ <\/i><\/span><\/div>\n
and of course you come from another place, <\/span><\/div>\n
you know the one that puts the customer first…<\/span><\/div>\n
The one where common sense prevails.<\/span><\/div>\n
It’s not a match made in paradise<\/span><\/div>\n
and you ARE making a fuss. <\/span><\/div>\n
and OMG more frizz-on. <\/span><\/div>\n

Of course the HK Employee training book says<\/span> you must adhere to all the rules with<\/span> absolute conformity, <\/span>where there are rules, <\/span><\/div>\n
but where there are no rules, <\/span>absolutely anything goes.<\/span><\/div>\n

Sometimes you don’t quite know whether the rule book is being applied.<\/span><\/div>\n
 Take these workers climbing up the bamboo scaffolding downtown Central on Saturday night.<\/span><\/div>\n

Bambozled in Central, Hong Kong<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
Now in Australia all Tradies would have said <\/span><\/div>\n
“cannot” and downed tools days ago for a beer and a barbie.<\/span><\/div>\n
WorkSafe would have been summoned and they’d have said ‘cannot’ too.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Or what about the Sai Kung Dogs Birthday party?<\/span><\/div>\n
Where tourists are amazed by the doggy delights at a local cafe.<\/span><\/div>\n
The uninvited guests stood around licking their lips.<\/span><\/div>\n

How do I score an invite to your party?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
Where the invite clearly said smart casual<\/span><\/div>\n
and fluffy dogs were dressed in their best collar & ties<\/span><\/div>\n
to savour the feast.<\/span><\/div>\n

And the special dog party food kept coming, plate after plate<\/span><\/div>\n
and of course it’s perfectly ok to have your paws and more on the table…<\/span><\/div>\n

Rules or no rules?<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
We head off to relax at our favourite reflexology place<\/span><\/div>\n
Happy Foot<\/span><\/div>\n
We’ve found some old loyalty cards in an old wallet<\/span><\/div>\n
‘Do any of these work?’<\/i> we ask<\/span><\/div>\n
‘We find out’<\/i> is the reply.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
We finish our foot massages and a sheet of paper is produced.<\/span><\/div>\n
It shows nine years ago we bought a book of ten foot massages, <\/span><\/div>\n
the last time we signed was 2010<\/span><\/div>\n
‘After today, one free foot massage left’<\/i>, they tell us<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
I had to smile<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n
of course it’s the same system<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n
the ‘cannot have breakfast’ and the ‘can have foot massage’<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n
Isn’t it wonderful? <\/i><\/span><\/div>\n
Gotta love Hong Kong!<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n
