I love an Aussie Christmas at the beach<\/span><\/div>\n
It\u2019s a relaxed, no fuss and bother affair.<\/span><\/div>\n
Well normally\u2026<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\n\n\n\n\n
<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Danger! It’s Christmas!<\/b><\/i><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n
We’re unusual, <\/span>
we clear out of the city for the beach on Christmas Eve,<\/span>
most of our friends stay in town for Christmas lunch with family,<\/span>
but for us, with our broader family overseas, it’s a lovely escape.<\/span><\/p>\n

We go to the Mornington Peninsula, <\/span>one hour out of Melbourne. <\/span>
By Boxing Day this place will be heaving.<\/span>
Melbourne-by-the-sea they call it;<\/span>
finding a car park will be tricky, <\/span>
and we’ll bump into more friends here on the Blairgowrie dog beach, <\/span>
than we will on any walk in the park back home!<\/span><\/p>\n

Our Rye beach house is in neighbourhood with mostly permanent homes.<\/span>
It’s become our Christmas Eve tradition, to take a quick stroll<\/span> around the block.<\/span>
We like to check out any local building developments <\/span>
and to admire the local decorations. <\/span><\/div>\n

Or maybe not. <\/span>

<\/span>Perhaps in our dreams, <\/span>
no one really bothers at the beach!<\/span>
Although we do spot a few… ok one, a sign that something is up\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\n
Our neighbours Ho, Ho, Ho declare \u2019tis the season to be jolly\u2019<\/i><\/b><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n
In the next street, the Crazy Poodle and I are somewhat taken aback <\/span><\/div>\n
with the Christmas spirit on display. <\/span>
He sniffs suspiciously and then starts to lift a leg <\/span>
\u201cNo!\u201d I say firmly, but I must admit I tend to agree with him! <\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\n\n\n\n\n
<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
You see there is absolutely no need to try to keep up with the Joneses here at the beach!<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n
We don’t stay out long, it’s too hot.<\/span>
The air conditioner is working flat out, <\/span>
but makes little impression.<\/span>

<\/span>I was pleased I stopped off at the Peninsula Pantry <\/span>
to pick up my pre-ordered quiche, salads, mince pies, gingerbread Xmas tree, <\/span>
and some gluten free spinach and feta balls for the girls <\/span>for dinner. <\/span>

<\/span>I’ve been back in the country less than 48 hours, <\/span>
and<\/i> done a day at work in all this!<\/span>
It’s too hot to even barbecue.<\/span>
‘You want the quiche hot, forget it!’<\/i><\/span>

<\/span>After an oppressive, sweaty and ominous night,<\/span>
we awoke to bright sunlight streaming in through the black-out curtains. <\/span>
It was to be the hottest Christmas day for seventeen years.<\/span><\/div>\n
 For once we were pleased for the <\/span>
‘all dogs off the beach <\/i><\/span>by 9am’ rule<\/i>. <\/span>
By 9.30am the pavement is too hot for little Santa paws.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Santa Paws is coming to town!<\/b><\/i><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n
We spend the day in the garden. <\/span><\/div>\n
Wild and blustery winds, providing some relief for us from the heat.<\/span><\/div>\n
Not elsewhere. <\/span>
It is the perfect storm for the Bushfire’s already raging.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
We did cook scrambled egg on the stove top but from then onwards <\/span><\/div>\n
we instigated a ‘no cooking inside’ regime.<\/span><\/div>\n
 It was a vain attempt to preserve some modicum of comfort. <\/span><\/div>\n
A total fire ban existed outside<\/span>
Weather conditions: extreme. <\/span>

<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Our chocolates melted!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n
The smoked salmon’s only appearance at the table was a brief affair.<\/span><\/div>\n
Served up along with the champagne for a brief ta-ra,<\/span><\/div>\n
  the remainders immediately returned back in the fridge.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
Across the state of Victoria the same conversations were taking place<\/span><\/div>\n
‘Shall we forgo the traditional Christmas veggies <\/i><\/span><\/div>\n
and just have a salad instead’?!<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
Our how to cook the Christmas lunch, was nothing <\/span><\/div>\n
compared with the woes of those in Lorne and Wye River across the Bay.<\/span>
The bush fire came with no respect for tradition.<\/span>

<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Gingerbread Christmas tree<\/b><\/i><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

One restaurant served up the entire turkey works<\/span>
before the order; evacuate, evacuate, evacuate came.<\/span>
Backpackers were at the beach and left with only their swimsuits<\/span>
before not being able to get back to their campsites.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

With friends abandoning Christmas lunches to flee <\/span>
or help the Firies at the Country Fire Authority (CFA), <\/span><\/div>\n
 news spread about the bush fires raging across the Bay.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n
We head to the Beach for a quick dip and cool down,<\/span><\/div>\n
but only for a paddle. <\/span>
The strong winds make the waves intense and the rips stronger than usual.<\/span><\/div>\n
Overhead we see the rescue helicopter, flying up and down the coast line.<\/span><\/div>\n
Waiting.<\/span>

Boxing Day is cooler, a sprinkling of rain brings some relief<\/span>
but we wake to news that over 120 houses have been lost<\/span>
but mercifully, with no loss of life.<\/span>

<\/span><\/div>\n
Our friend’s son is a newbie CFA volunteers in his first year<\/span>.<\/span>
They are on the breakfast television and on the front page of the Herald Sun.<\/span>
Local heroes, for defending the town, together with his Dad and the other CFA Wye River Firies as the fire raged.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
He is now 22 years old, <\/span>
but it seems like only yesterday the kids <\/span>
were all starting school together…<\/span>
