Bangkok has reasonable public transport options to avoid traffic jams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We arrived In Bangkok to be presented with a car and a driver for our use as part of the &#8216;deal&#8217; to move there.\u00a0 I\u00a0 have girlfriends who have been driving here for thirty years and think nothing of it. We are not banned from driving the car, but it was certainly discouraged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You need to consider whether you want a car, you certainly don&#8217;t need a car, and then if you have a car whether you will drive it.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of my thoughts after a year of spending a lot of time in traffic jams in Bangkok!<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">1. <a href=\"https:\/\/coconuts.co\/bangkok\/news\/thai-roads-deadliest-planet-world-atlas\/\">Thailand\u2019s roads are the most dangerous in the world<\/a>. Do you want to be in charge of a lethal weapon in this country? No me neither, just call me a chicken but I am happy to leave it to a professional driver.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">2.They do say if you ever have an accident the police are allegedly more inclined if they see a \u2018Farang\u2019 (foreigner) at the wheel of a car to assume you are to blame, I am happy to say I have no experience of Thai police either way. But think about it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">3. How good are you at driving under pressure? Signage is poor, or not surprisingly in Thai and road rules are not the same as in our western cultures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">You will not be a get anywhere in Bangkok if you want to follow what we would consider are normal, polite and safe road traffic rules. Like obeying stop signs&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1219\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Driving-1024x1024.jpg?resize=700%2C700&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/staging\/8794\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Driving.jpg?resize=1024%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/staging\/8794\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Driving.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/staging\/8794\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Driving.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/staging\/8794\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Driving.jpg?resize=768%2C768&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/staging\/8794\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Driving.jpg?resize=230%2C230&amp;ssl=1 230w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/staging\/8794\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Driving.jpg?w=2048&amp;ssl=1 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">4. How much spoken Thai do you have? Ask yourself do you have enough Thai to get yourself out of trouble if you find yourself in it? This is everything from getting lost, needing to know the \u2018shortcuts\u2019 or in the likely event of an incident. This is equally as relevant when you are going by public transport.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">5. How important is it to arrive at your destination looking cool and composed? With a driver, you sit back relax and arrive at the door of your destination. As long as you can cope with just chillin&#8217; when everything is at a standstill&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1225\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Transport1-1024x1024.jpg?resize=700%2C700&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"700\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">6. How far from public transport do you live? Bangkok is well renowned for being one of the worst cities for traffic jams. If you live close to the Bangkok Transportation Stations or Skytrain, or river you will have access to most places you want to go, but for me point 5 is important. I can\u2019t even get from my apartment door, down in the unairconditioned lift and into the car without looking like a Sweaty Betty. Add in a 200m walk to the Skytrain and whoosh there goes any point in washing my hair that day!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1227\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Bangkok-Traffic-1024x853.jpg?resize=700%2C583&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"583\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/staging\/8794\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Bangkok-Traffic.jpg?resize=1024%2C853&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/staging\/8794\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Bangkok-Traffic.jpg?resize=300%2C250&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/staging\/8794\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Bangkok-Traffic.jpg?resize=768%2C640&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.littlewanderingwren.com\/staging\/8794\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Bangkok-Traffic.jpg?w=2048&amp;ssl=1 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">7 Are you a FIT person? By this, I mean a Free Independent Traveller. If you hate to have a driver knowing exactly what are doing and where you are going all the time, then this might not be for you. I learned early on that everywhere the car goes is logged for HR records, yep that\u2019s every spa, every lunch with the girls, every shopping centre I take the company car to\u2026 and with my HR hat on that\u2019s probably fair enough but&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">Taxi\u2019s are cheap however communicating your destination, preferred route and getting the drivers to put the meter on are another thing! Company policy &#8211; if you have moved to Bangkok with a company you may well find that company policy dictates your decision. We got a car, it was non-negotiable. It was all to do with employee safety and probably company image.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>My husband&#8217;s company has a fleet of cars and a team of drivers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">We inherited our car from the last employee and just so I can set the scene, I refer to it as\u00a0 Popemobile although I doubt the pope has disco roof lighting? It was far bigger than I would have ever chosen, but it comes in handy and one way and another I am often giving people lifts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">For me I love the car, I call it my office. I have everything there, my computer, WIFI, a good book, my gym kit, my flat shoes in case I decide to bail and get on public transport. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">I would not be without the car or the driver, it is a big part of me getting out and about every day enjoying Bangkok.
